How the ‘evil twin’ of the climate crisis is threatening our oceans; In seas around the world pH levels are falling – and scientists are increasingly frustrated that the problem is not taken seriously

The great thing about low pH oceans is that it would snowball so quickly once it gets past a certain threshold, that we would have barely any time to react. It would kill us all in a matter of months at most.

Spend your summers playing at the bleach

Don’t threaten me with a good time

wrote on last edited by [email protected]Yeah, more CO2 in the atmosphere and higher temps would be absolutely terrible but somewhat "livable", but acidic oceans ? If most plankton and algae die, we're done and there would be nothing we could do about it.

Oh yeah, it's low pH not high
Nice pun though !

This song captures your comment perfectly IMHO: Upbeat on the outside, dark as hell on the inside.,

wrote on last edited by [email protected]It's not 'just' about plants and algae dying, it's about the tipping point for the climate. Oceans are a huge carbon sink, considering all the carbonates that Coral Reefs, Clam Shells and stuff like that are made of. The more acidic it becomes, the more those carbonates will react to become carbon dioxide, that will end up in the atmosphere, thus still enhancing the greenhouse effect.
Bit of a vicious cycle there.

“Talking chimps destroy own planet, and themselves”
More like "All chimps listens to the most charismatic chimps even though they are narcissistic idiots and that leads to their destruction"

I disagree with that prediction.
The planet will be fine with it. Life will adapt to it. Even humans will survive it, as a species.
But our modern inustrialized civilizations will collapse.
The paradoxical thing is, that those greedy, wealthy elites who are mostly responsible don't care, because they think they're the ones to survive, when in reality, their wealth and power relies the most on the status quo of the rules of society.

We can't even work together to stop genocides being broadcast live. Any hope of working together to protect the environment, especially when it is unprofitable and requires sacrifices to standard of living, is a pipe dream.

Once jellyfish become the only remaining sea creature, just eat those

It will be interesting to learn the exact conditions for each of the tipping points, if only it wasn’t our environment. Tipping

Don't worry about that. Pretty soon Israel will have killed all the journalists willing to go into Gaza so it won't be broadcast for long!
