This is the reason why you never touch another person's phone.

I know Lemmy is gonna say "stop being addicted to your phone" but like I'm asking this question with more of a like "fuck corporate" attitude. I mean like, just a quick peak at an internet thread, wikipedia, news, memes, etc. Maybe messages or group chats... Just an occasion glance every like 15 minutes or so to keep yourself sane, like a little drip of dopamine to get you through the day, you know.

Or is a smartwatch hidden under long sleeves better?

Or like... is text to voice better? (Like with a hidden earbud hidden under some wigs to listen to the text, while the other ear can still can have awareness of surroundings?)

Don't do that if you're over 30. Great way to get hemorrhoids

#1 mobile data only. No wifi.

It blows my mind that anyone would connect a personal device to their employer's Wifi.

Keep an unfinished task on hand that you can pick up at a seconds notice.

Wait. Are you telling me that it's not normal to constantly have 5 unfinished tasks at any given time?

Ah! Looks like you made the mistake of "getting things done" which has now caused you to have extra work for the same amount of pay...

You're going to have to cut your losses and find a new job to fix that one.

discreetly? before being 100% work from home, i used to stream my tv with plex with my tablet on my desk. I'd usually just put one earbud in and leave the other ear to hear people if they needed me.

In highschool however (back in the late 90s) i used to listen to music from my walkman by fishing the corded earbuds from my pants pocket and in thru my sleeve. I'd hold the earbuds in my hand and the oversized hoodie sleeve would conceal everything perfectly. I'd rest my head in my hand with the earbuds and I'd look like any other student getting their work done.

I don't care, if I want to look at my phone, I look at it. I get shit done, so nobody gives me grief. This might not work everywhere, but I wouldn't work at a place that nitpicked over stuff like that.

We don't have micromanagers in leadership positions so I whip that bad boy out and stare at it like everyone else in the office.

Yeeee when I have to go in, I just have it in front of me with stuff playing all day and my earbuds in, and whenever I get a message or I’m curious about something I don’t wanna look up on my work machine, I just pick it up and… use it like a phone. I know I’m lucky to be able to do that, but I can’t deny it’s awesome.

Make yourself irreplaceable. That’s what I did.

I'm working on that now. When I started, they made me one of five admins on their scheduling software. The other four have since left the organization, and I'm not going out of my way to teach the users any more than they absolutely need. 😂

Interestingly, I did go out of my way to explain to others how made my code and what though processes went into some of the design decisions I made. I even wrote it all down into 3+ .md files and served them on the local network for everyone to read.

                          Guess what?
I'm still called when big changes need to be made, or when some behaviour needs to be explained.
And I get paid by the hour, instead of having to do 45hr/week in the office.

                                “getting things done”

One thing I love about my current position. I’m the guy that gets shit done, “does more work for the same pay” as you put it. But, thankfully, if I’m just not feeling it that day I just don’t, and I get no backlash. I just move slower, people see it and offer me help more than on days when I’m cruising by. No one ever asks me to do any extra work because “he’s probably already busy getting shit done”

The calls are good. You want those.

I get calls from different depts, and I quickly fix their issues, and as opposed to someone who only interacted with their own dept, I've got people all over the organization thinking "Yeah, I know rhynoplaz, he's really friendly and helpful!"

I know Lemmy is gonna say "stop being addicted to your phone" but like I'm asking this question with more of a like "fuck corporate" attitude

I gained a reputation in my work as someone always glued to the phone, even when walking home. Not that I care much about what others think, but in my defense, I am trading stocks. I toned down using my phone because I got called out by my supervisor as it had affected my work performance. In my role, we have lots of downtime in between the tasks and using phone is allowed so long as we do the job properly. Anyhow, not that I mind much what they think of me because my plan for early retirement is more important than my company needs who could eventually throw you under the bus 😝 I know companies don't always appreciate long time employees so why should I give 110%? Some people give too much to companies but not me.

Or like... is text to voice better? (Like with a hidden earbud hidden under some wigs to listen to the text, while the other ear can still can have awareness of surroundings?)

The calls are good. You want those.

I get calls from different depts, and I quickly fix their issues, and as opposed to someone who only interacted with their own dept, I've got people all over the organization thinking "Yeah, I know rhynoplaz, he's really friendly and helpful!"

Of course I do. That's what gets me paid, nowadays.
The only difference being that I did put the effort to make others understand my work (and more than how much I needed to).
It's just that they still find it much more convenient to call me, get me to do the work and then copy it all into their project (which would then require changes), rather making the whole algorithm themselves.
