What is the right way to eat a Mango?
-
First of all I am THE objective authority about eating mangoes and that is not up for debate thank you very much. As much is my goddamn birthright.
Secondly it depends on the breed of mango.
Now idk what kinds exist everywhere in the world but I do know that theres several legitimate ways to eat the varieties found in India and Pakistan.
If you can ever get your hands on em try one of the Pakistani breeds.
- Chaunsa (white, sweet and black)- the best stuff imo.
- Dusehri-great texture.
- Anwar Ratol- small, sweet, very flavourful. Short shelf life.
- Sindhri- queen of mangoes.
Theres also badshah pasand which I believe Shah Jahan loved and was pissed his son Aurangzeb was taking some of his. (Mughal Emperors and my ancestors as it so happens)
- Cutting into slices is acceptable, skin on.
- Cutting into cups is acceptable for kids (and me)
- Squishing them when skin on to pulp them and then breaking the little black nipple tk suck out the pulp is acceptable for certain varieties. Anwar Ratol for example.
- Cutting into skinless squares to be eaten with forks will be allowed so long as you do it with shame.
Love the passion you have for this and you clearly have experience. Mango is my favorite fruit, by far.
I have questions.
*Why should I be shamed for cutting them into skinless squares?
*If I didn’t eat them it with a fork should I still be shamed for cutting mango into skinless squares?
*What is cutting into cups? Sounds like a style of cutting/preparing but also could be just the receptacle you use to hold the mango, so I am confused by the ambiguity.
*It seems that your mango experience is South Asian centric, as you point out, but have you had much experience with Central/South American mangos? If so, how are they different from your preferred mango varietals?
Thank you for the list of mangos I should try. I may have had several of them before as I have travelled through South Asia several times, but alas, it was in the less mango informed days of my youth.
Keep on keeping on, mango buddy!

Oh yeah need the right breed of mangoes for this to work, need a thick skin and easy to remove seed.
One thing that works for me is pulling it out with my teeth instead of hands, also a lil twist to loosen it first.
Paper towel or napkin works too for getting enough grip to manipulate a mango seed without it slipping.

Mangoes are also my favourite fruit. Also the favourite fruit of anyone who's ever tried one.

skinless squares: its the clean, unmessy, 'sophisticated' way of eating it. We get down and dirty.
-
without fork: that is unheard of! This is a new permutation I was unprepared for, I'll allow it.
-
ive explained the cup method in another reply with an image. But it's a novelty thing that kids love.

unfortunately haven't had much exposure to american mangos, central or south. South Asians who've had both dont tend to like them. But locals seem to love them anyways.
Apparently they aren't as sweet and lack depth of flavour.
I'm sure you've tried a Chaunsa if you've been in south Asia.
Thank you and hope you get go visit South Asia again for more mangoes soon.

Over the sink, peeling as you go, possibly also high
This is the way

Put it in the fridge for a few hours, then eat it sitting down in a warm shower.

The superior way is to eat it like corn on the cob. Start at the pointier end and chew straight back to the mangonus. Don’t forget to smother it in butter after shucking the husk.

wrote last edited by [email protected]Peel it and smush it into your face whole. Wear swimmers. Then go for a swim.
Edit: works best with a Kensington Pride. Dunno why you'd choose anything else, really, unless you've already eaten all the Kensington Prides.

Do it over a plate and lick the plate after

100% i was just trying to stir the pot in a light hearted fashion.
I usually like to say that my favorite way to eat (thing i don't like) is to leave it for those who will enjoy it

The traditional way. Peel it and look directly into the camera as you slowly lick the peels.

Slice both long sides into mango filets, then trim the short sides into strips, and finally cut off the few bits of leftover pulp

I usually just give up any sense of civility and get my face in there. I have yet to find an efficient way of eating mango that does not result in X-rated mangolingus action with my beard dripping with mango juice.
Cut the sides off when the pit is horizontal; that'll let you get the largest cuts without cutting into the pit. You can then bite into the flesh of the pieces you cut off with minimal mess and either bite into the flesh along the pit or cut the flesh off the pit.
Your hands will probably still get a bit messy but your face will largely be spared.

Bite a hole in the bottom, squeeze it like an orange and suck out the juice through the hole

In Guadalupe I learned the manner of consuming mango 'a titi maman' (mother's breasts). You massage the fruit through the skin, then make a small hole in the skin and then suck the liquified flesh through the hole.
This only works with super ripe fruits, like you would be finding on a Carribean island.
It's not the most practical but as mango consuming method relevant to the thread.

It's the most cultivated fruit in the world. "Is your method superior??" Get outta here. If you're bored and want to see people argue, try reddit.
