Is anyone here so hardcore that they don't even bother with mainstream social media? If its not on Lemmy or Mastodon it must not be important? Anyone that hardcore?

Lemmy only. Actually, I just can't stand the corpoverse, it's litterally painful for me to browse. The only exception so far is instagram because it's dopamine gold and you can discover a lot of things, but this is less and less true. And with voyager integrating pixelfed in upcoming updates... well i'll just migrate

did you know reddit started shadowbanning new accounts, and old inactive accounts that suddenly started posting. it was a recent thing, it wouldve happened to people who dint use thier old inactive accounts eventually. also reddit have been extremely oppressive with thier filters, and sub filters too.

Honestly, since I found Lemmy, I mostly ignore (or don't even see) Reddit news. Rarely it still shows up when I search things, but I just view those without logging in and don't vote / comment.

seeing as that's every comment section and every single post.

        Why shouldn't it be?

Because there are other things to talk about, and it’s depressing and not something the average citizen can really control on their own.

I really don’t care about whatever new crime against humanity they’re doing next, I just want to see Cities: Skylines content, or at least some mildly interesting discussions.

The only social media I really use is Lemmy. I have instagram strictly because that’s where my sibling’s meme group chat is and they don’t want to move. I don’t use it for anything else.

Occasionally I'll hit up a reddit result if I'm doing a search looking for an answer to a specific question. But I never browse it since the 3rd party apps stopped working.

Same same. I moved to Firefox for Android back then and use ublock to hide their nags forcing you to use their app. And of course the ads they were trying to shove down our throats by killing third party apps. It's still a great repository of knowledge that I'll search via Google, but otherwise I browse for fun here.

I realized sometime in the last year that Lemmy provided me all the usual community groups I needed and actually content I wanted to read (I never really used Reddit to just browse, outside of the sub.s I'd joined).

And I've been using Mastodon since, like 2020 or something (never was a fan of Twitter, though).

Also stopped using Facebook though that's probably more due to burnout and falling out of touch with a lot of the people in my life. Facebook really did make navigating socializing and keeping in touch both easier and less energy intensive and it is, for me, a good example of how social media can be good rather than this nebulous Garbage™ that people seem to emotionally brand such a large classification as. Shame about it being owned by one of the worst human beings (but it was also always going to end up as shit – in the end –, so long as owned by a corporation); since I'd already dropped in using it, I just opted to stay stopped.

Still use YouTube as there isn't a real viable alternative yet; itching for the day they're is.

And still use Tumblr, as most of those I socialize with are on there; though it has built up plenty of its own enshittification over the last few years. If I ever finish my Fediverse clone of it, that's where I'll be sprinting to.

I stopped reddit a couple years ago, and I only use lemmy. This is like my 6th account, and instance hop. Definitely a system that works better for me.

These are my main social media platforms now.

I might hit a Reddit link here or there because occasionally the information I need is posted there (that I found from a web search). But I don't browse that site ever any more.

                              Deleted Twitter because of elon.
                              Deleted Facebook after Cambridge Analytica.
Never had Instagram (will never download a Meta app at this point).

The reason I would call reddit social media is that I don't agree with any of those rules

The closest I would agree with is 2, and not based on lack of anonymity but instead on persistence of identity, and that being core to the experience

I was part of subreddits where users knew each other as distinct personalities, and could converse across different threads across time, and occasionally IRL from various meetups

When a website doesn't have a lively and persistent 'local' community (maybe geographic, maybe subject etc) it can't really be social

Social media has nothing to do with being social. People were social on websites long before “social media” existed. Calling forums “social media” is just conflating forums (which have no requirement of having any sort of algorithmic popularity or ranking) with those that do, like Facebook.

Your description of Reddit is literally a description of a forum. For the past 40 years it’s been that way.

Seeing how this post has 600 replies and I see a lot of activity in the past 6 months I feel Lemmy is doing pretty well as a reddit alternative.

I certainly don't miss the amount of shitposting that reddit had. Literally every first post was some dumb joke that didn't even made me chuckle..

It means that I was able to dump accounts, and instances, when the people running them, or something else, made me no longer like the the place. So I was able to just pick-up and move. Which is nice.

Who set those rules? Is there standards body that promulgates them? I remember that social media emerged as a term to describe media on which the users provided the content, rather than traditional gatekeepers like newspapers and TV networks. Wikipedia agrees, using special jargon, distinguishing between monologic and dialogic media models.

                                        Reddit is quintessential social media.

Social media emerged as a term to describe Facebook and MySpace, places where you added connections between friends and shared moments of your life with them, not a comment section on a website. Using the term “social media” to describe something that existed before those sites existed devalues the actual worth of forums as a meeting place. There is clearly a difference between something like Twitter and Facebook who’s only purpose is to show you ads and things to get you angry using algorithms and places like Lemmy and really any sort of comment section (Reddit and 4chan included) that are simply people talking to each other.

I would expect most people here would be able to understand the difference and how referring to things that are distinctly not Facebook or Twitter as being in the same category. Reddit, Lemmy, your random double edge razor forum, etc are not social media. They’re forums. They’ve existed for thousands of years.

Don't make me laugh. Options? Lemmynsfw.com and that's about it. It deserves some donations from me if I can figure out the cryptocurrency options.

Pretty new user, wasn’t aware. Thanks for the info, guess Reddit will have to entertain me for free for the foreseeable future then. Can’t say I feel bad.
