CNN: Russia and China are trying to recruit Musk-fired officials from the US administration who had access to sensitive information. They are attracted through job offers on social networks, specially created to suit the targeted person. American officials warn that a major security risk has thus been created.

According to US intelligence officials and a document consulted by CNN, foreign spy agencies in Russia and China are taking advantage of the Trump administration's plan to carry out mass layoffs among federal employees. They target, in particular, individuals who have had or have access to sensitive information related to critical US infrastructure and critical government mechanisms.

A Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) document mentions that foreign entities use platforms such as LinkedIn, TikTok, the Chinese app RedNote and Reddit to identify and contact possible sources. According to the assessments, at least one foreign agent was instructed to create a (fake) company profile on LinkedIn, where they would post job advertisements and actively search for former federal employees, the NCIS document said.

Within US national security agencies, including the CIA, officials are looking at the risks and possible measures to prevent recruitment. But several officials say the Trump Administration does not take the intelligence community's warnings seriously. The former director of counterintelligence at the National Security Council warned that fired employees who feel betrayed by their former employer are much more likely to divulge sensitive information.

Recently, the CIA and the Pentagon announced massive staff cuts. A Defense Department document reveals that more than five thousand employees on probation could be fired, and the CIA has already laid off at least 20 officers. In fact, the CIA sent the White House, through an unprotected server, a list of new employees, including undercover officers, which CNN considers “a serious security incident”.

Losing intelligence to Russia is probably not a bug, but a feature. Same with how the current administration seems very intent on weakening the US's cybersecurity. China would be somewhat new, but at least Musk seems pretty China-friendly.

Link to the original article: https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/28/politics/us-intel-russia-china-attempt-recruit-disgruntled-federal-employees/index.html

In other news, this is expected. Fire enough people with skills and knowledge being brutal about it and you create some disaffection. If Russia and China weren't trying to fish something in there they'd be negligent.

I think if I was fired by Musk, I'd have no problem selling critical information to opponents. At that point there's not much to lose so you may as well.

This might have been by design.

Collectively and as a society, there's a lot to lose still.

On a personal level, society can go screw itself when that same society just fired you for no good reason and now you can't pay rent.
