So I gather there's different 'breeds'(?) each with a different gestation cycle - some 11 years, others 4, 8 etc.
Which just means every one in a while when the cycles overlap you get crazy pants amounts of cicada instead of just 'the usual metric fuckton'...

I was visiting Nashville at the peak of the 2024 Cicadapocalypse. My god I have never seen anything like that. My office had to keep sweeping the corpses out, live ones bumping you and sticking to your clothes and hair, great joy. And the sound was deafening and non-stop.

Crazy for our two days up there! Then we went back down South, saw a handful at most.
I wish I could convey what it was like IRL, lacking the writing skills. But yeah, stunning is the best word I got. America hasn't seen such an event since 1803! You could hardly walk without stomping a live one. Birds were FAT and I can't imagine what all the shells were like after. CRUNCH, crunch, CRUNCH, crunch.
There are plenty of videos, but like a hurricane or tornado, they just don't convey the sense of what it was like on the ground.
