One other side point that came to mind after the main post.

We're so conditioned to think realistic violence in games is fine, but realistic sex in games is "wrong" or "sad". But honestly, I realized I played through 3+ games without doing any violence* and had a blast, and that was actually really refreshing.

    *^okay,^ ^no^ ^non-consensual^ ^violence.^ ^I^ ^may^ ^have^ ^slapped^ ^Lyssa's^ ^dick^ ^around,^ ^but^ ^she^ ^requested^ ^it.^

You know that even fantasy sex is a problem to the puritan mind, even mild representations of sex like activities becomes weird.
Well in the Western society that is. I found out that some temples in India are finely decorated with more or less explicit scenes. In certain societies sex is seen as an engine.
The issue with violence is that it isn't just highly but it's nearly a constant in our western society. Go back to the middle ages, how many people whacked each other in popular imagery. Even recently we have seen more violence than ever. Gore doesn't do much any longer for many adults, but it's supposed to elicit a strong evolutionary reflex of disgust and fear. I feel we've been overexposed to these things, but not others.

It's certainly what the majority of the genre became with the advent of mobile gaming, as with so many other simple puzzle games. But the original Bejeweled and Puzzle Quest were both excellent and huge hits, and were complete games before the microtransaction garbage that came later.

It's a nice genre for relaxing and turning off your brain, similar to a Tetris or a Bust-A-Move. I know there have to be titty and microtransaction filled variants of both of those, does it invalidate them as puzzle game genres?

I remember seeing a large bejeweled cabinet in a service station back in 2009. Or around that age. What a beast.

I've never really played any porn games more hardcore than Baldur's Gate 3 before, but you remember a couple weeks ago when GOG gave away those NSFW games, as a direct response to the whole thing?

Well I claimed the bundle just to boost their numbers (because censorship is bullshit), but recently I needed a low-difficulty gaming distraction, so I checked a few of them out, and... some of them are kind of good?

Like first off you have to be okay with visual novels (usually), but if you're cool with that, some of them actually have some compelling characters, and occasionally even good gameplay in between all the fucking and whatnot.

Leap of Love is amusing, kind of adorable when it comes to the not-sex stuff, and charming. It is also a game where you (a former frog) can marry and simultaneously bed 3 princesses and their stepmother after deposing of the evil king. My brain is still trying to reconcile this.

Huniepop is one of the best match 3 puzzle games I've ever played, with a chill as hell soundtrack. Also a scantily-clad foul-mouthed love fairy wants you to fuck every woman in a 5 mile radius who can fog a mirror.

And Crom help me, when I finished... sigh... Fetish Locator Week 1, I actually cared enough about some of the characters to buy the next one.

The point is, some of these games have more depth and value than I'd been led to believe, and I wouldn't have known that if the censorship thing hadn't started that chain of events. So congrats censorship people, and honestly thanks, I guess? Completely the opposite of your intended effect. Task failed successfully.

I've always been open to adult only games, but for the vast majority there are only two basic types:

        • Visual Novels - Everything about these is fine. They vary from basically just a graphic novel to a full on RPG.

        • Nude Puzzles - Various cheap-ass puzzles with nude images as the prize.

I want, like, a real game but with full adult only content. These exist, but are hard to find. And a lot of those I've found aren't finished, never will be finished, and/or just suck. It doesn't even have to be the focus. Just imagine if when you got a hooker in GTA or some other game where brothels might exist, you got to see more than a fade to black/car bouncing around.

A good H-game with more that 4 hours of content, good porn, and good gameplay are rare finds. Not to mention the pain in the ass of finding the decensor patches or using a non-Steam, non-English site to buy it.

That seems like a fair assessment of the current state of things, but I do want to stress how good Huniepop is as a puzzle game alone. One sparkling jewel in a sea of erotic sliding puzzle and jigsaw crap.

If you removed everything outside the actual gem matching gameplay and soundtrack, I would still play it.

And yeah, I started poking around and saw some of the more ambitious open world projects like you're talking about, and they all looked like abandoned early access. But if they have the technical ability, why not show my character licking some Asari ladyparts in Mass Effect 5? Adults play a shitload of video games too. Make it an optional DLC if you have to.

The biggest issue with adult content in games is that it limits your market to adults that want that content. Which is already small to begin with. And you often can't advertise the same way, which limits your audience further. You only find out about them through word of mouth or through places like Lemmy.

From the standpoint of the developer, your ROI is likely to be very small. I think that's why VN are the most popular form of adult games, since they are easier to make than full games.

Leading up to the release of Cyberpunk 2077 there was a relatively innocent post about whether players would be able to romance anyone and sleep with them. The absolute mockery and scorn OP received was shameful. It really struck me because it was so clear how we've been conditioned to reject sexuality while at the same time being ultra-desensitized to violence.

What I do recall was one guy asking very specific questions about how much we would be able to customize genitals, and whether sex would be fully interactive with visuals of full penetration.

And while none of those things are wrong per se, the general vibe of asking about all of those things was very weird and pervy.

Thanks for the warning. I'd started playing because I needed a distraction from some hard IRL stuff, so that's good to know. It was nice that when I fired up Being a DIK from the same bundle, they straight out ask you at the beginning if you're going through shit right now, and gently suggest the game may be rough for you if you are.

Adult games give emotional support these days. Not all, but many understand and respect the player to a degree not normally found in games. And because all the right wing puritans aren't playing those games, no one is complaining about other hot button topics like gender, equality, etc.

LoF does the same mid game right before it hits the hardest with even offering to skip the scene entirely.
However all characters are really likable, have some really good development and it is an overall (bitter)sweet story with lots of happy endings

If you're open to a platformer, the only explicitly adult game I've tried is FlipWitch. The gimmick is that you can change your sex, with certain obstacles only able to be passed through by a specific sex. You also have clothing that can only be worn by each sex, and certain NPCs won't interact unless you're wearing certain items. It's a solid metroidvania, and while it's not going to blow you away, I still enjoyed my time with it.

congratulations on starting your journey with adult games!

i've found my way to it via visual novels. my initial thought were like they're almost the same as any "teenage-romance book" but with more interaction so what could go wrong, right?

totally agree with you that there's a lot of stigma going on around sexuality that makes people miss out on good games.

Hm maybe my memory of the post is fuzzy but that is more pervy than I recalled. Still gets to the larger point though about how we talk about violence in graphic detail with no self-consciousness but can't do the same for sexuality.

It's certainly what the majority of the genre became with the advent of mobile gaming, as with so many other simple puzzle games. It's a nice genre for relaxing and turning off your brain, similar to a Tetris or a Bust-A-Move. I know there have to be titty and microtransaction filled variants of both of those, does it invalidate them as puzzle game genres?

One other side point that came to mind after the main post.

We're so conditioned to think realistic violence in games is fine, but realistic sex in games is "wrong" or "sad". But honestly, I realized I played through 3+ games without doing any violence* and had a blast, and that was actually really refreshing.

                                *^okay,^ ^no^ ^non-consensual^ ^violence.^ ^I^ ^may^ ^have^ ^slapped^ ^Lyssa's^ ^dick^ ^around,^ ^but^ ^she^ ^requested^ ^it.^

And then you usually get "But the sex isn't realistic!!!"... yeah? Neither is the violence, unless you are frequently the Doomslayer or something?!

Like, how is that even an argument. How can violence in games be preferrable to sex?!

Yeah the exceptions are rare, and then many like HuniePop 1 and 2 or Subverse lean intentionally into overdone slapstick.

(That being said HuniePop I can't recommend enough, easily the best match-3 out there completely ignoring the porn parts)

Considering the dev’s previous game, Acting Lessons, that warning is worth taking seriously. That game has a fantastic story, but it has some rough shit go down. Although I will say that by the end of season 1 of Being a ΔΙΚ I don’t think there had been much “rough if you’re going through some shit” stuff. I haven’t played season 2 yet.

What I do recall was one guy asking very specific questions about how much we would be able to customize genitals, and whether sex would be fully interactive with visuals of full penetration.

And while none of those things are wrong per se, the general vibe of asking about all of those things was very weird and pervy.

And? What is the answer to these questions? Asking for a friend ...

For vnovels, check out Katawa Shoujo. It has a great storyline and characters, and it's free!

If you're looking for a platformer I'd recommend Flipwitch - Forbidden Sex Hex
