I think to most of those people it's like the US is trying to "steal" the name America from the rest of the continents, but it's really only the Spanish speaking parts of the Americas that feel that way about it. But they can have it their way in their language, and it doesn't detract from anything. It's like getting pissy because some cultures count continents by separating Europe from Asia and others have Eurasia (without even getting started on Afro-Eurasia).

Americans are so dumb when it comes to timezones we could just assign Maintana to GMT+5, Washconsin GMT+6 and so on downwards. It wouldn't make any difference to them and it'd be a lot more fun for the rest of us.

I feel like any major restructure like that would require some sort of open border policy, even if temporary, simply because people have never had any reason to not move..? And if we Balkanize with closed borders from go, well that’s for sure going to cause conflict.
