How many musicians we got here on Lemmy?
-
Mostly American stuff, the way I like to play solo is with fingerpicking chord melodies. I'll usually try to find a way to play the tune with my open chords and then mix in some other voicings to spice it up.
When playing early dance music I prefer to strum diads though; I'm usually in the middle or low register in a dance pit, filling out the sound for the melody instruments like vielle or citole.
Dyads makes sense actually, the closest I've ever gotten to finding a sound I like for it is when I'm playing my guitar that I keep in open C tuning. Vielles and citoles would be a rare sight over my way, but violins take on the exact same role. Thanks for the advice!

I traded in my pedal collection for a GT-3 decades ago, and I won't look back.
I get option paralysis when I don’t keep things dedicated to one pedal-one sound. I had a GT-1000 for about a year and never felt at home with it. Way happier with a small watt tube amp and dedicated pedals.

Have you followed/subbed to the bass communities on Lemmy? The more people do it, the more they'll talk there. Just gotta take the first baby steps.
It's posting that really gets the ball rolling. Spread out over days/weeks helps a lot.

Music discussion is very lacking here for. Compared to reddit. And yeah I know, 'just post then'. But when I search for music communities here they're empty. And it makes sense because no-one is posting. So kind of a catch 22.
now i dont exactly know how all this lemmy stuff works but... to all you musos out there, can you join me and search for music under communities (I'm using summit app) and just at a minimum subscribe to all the ones that you would be interested in(if they were popping off)?
At least that way when one of us posts, the rest of us will actually see it (I suspect).
Anyway. Keep making the world more fun for everyone else.
P.s if your not a musician, but you like golf or something, subscribe to the golf communities even if they're empty.
I used to play saxophone, clarinet and flute for years, but then I moved to Australia and I didn't bring any of them with me. They're expensive here, too, so I can't bring myself to buy another..
Though now I have an Irish low whistle, I haven't had a chance to really get in to it because of changing jobs, moving houses, etc etc. The lack of buttons is challenging.
I admit, though, I have a longing to just get back in to a community band again just to be surrounded by music again.

Edit: I posted quite a lot on jazz, gave up, went back. I'm only saying this to point out what is probably obvious, that I love the form
I think realistically, jazz is both an intimidating, and quite inaccessible form in ways. Someone just dipping in their toes can find that what they expected was a cozy warm hot spring, and ended up in an infinite pool stretching in all directions
It can be really scary and disorienting!
I feel jazz isn't really a genre so much as a viewpoint on life and sound, and that can make it so difficult to find common ground
So in a weird way, it might be better if there was less discussion and more sharing. That's probably a weird view. But what I would like is kind of selfish in my own way. The more people share and feel free to do so without judgment, the happier I am! Because I love new music, but like any normal human I do get trapped in certain vortexes. Apparently I entered a time warp to the 50s-70s and haven't found a single step back in 20 years lol

Have you followed a cello community on Lenny? Maybe it'll keep the spark alive for you enough to get back to the strings. I wanted to play cello as a kid because of that little half plastic ball that goes on the end of the metal stick so you don't scratch the ground. Saw one that looked like a galaxy and was hooked, but they only had violins left at my school. so, you are essentially living my dream.
Lol thanks. You should try to find a teacher near you. It is never to late to learn!

wrote on last edited by [email protected]I've played guitar on and off since I was about 7, but I'm still amateurish at best. I got some lessons in my late teens from a co-worker that got me good enough to bash out chords in the church band. Played bass briefly in a band after quitting the church in the early nineties, but didn't really touch an instrument again until the divorce in '09. I've been playing ukulele since then after getting some cheap ones for my kids and learning it myself to teach them and fell in love with it. I used to go busking with it 5-6 days a week singing and playing covers when I was unemployed and broke, but that ended about ten years ago when I had to get a real job.
I've never considered myself a musician, though.

I'm a bassist in a few bands. Wish there was more bass discussion here on Lemmy.
If you're into prog rock, check out one of my band's songs: frog rock
wrote on last edited by [email protected]if you can't tell from my username. I am also a bassist.
I've been getting into some transcription groups of FB. That might be a good community here? I get bored real quick of photos of pedal boards, ampeg/orange stacks, Rickenbackers and alcoholism memes

I play the guitar, but mostly I just learn tricky songs and I try to play them. I would happily read about music though.

My guitarist has been a jazz player for 20 years. It's fantastic. My band is working on funk originals. And I can say make that chord sadder and he can get it in more ways than just changing to minor. I can say hey, make my vocal land as the 7th to a chord and he can just find it. like damn. I have enough theory to get creative but it takes me ages to work it out. But it's all at the tip of his fingers. Amazing.

It's all in the mind
Your right. I can hear it now.
-
That's the thing though. Sub to specific and sub to general, it only takes a few seconds and it's free. So no real downside
-
that's fine but it also kind of sounds terrible or too "plastic", I'm thinking of buy an electric drum set and learning drums and through learning I'll be able to pick through the samples I like using and in turn that ends up kind of pre-mixing some of my drum recordings (if it gets to that)
I know what you mean though, I'm on Linux so the options for those I'm not sure is the same as windows. addictive drums might just not work
I'm slowly moving to linux. Haven't checked if addictive drums works there yet. I don't know if you just assumed they sound plastic but it actually slaps I think. No one has ever told me my drums sound like shit.
-
I love acoustic and classical guitar. Never could make electric work for me. Maybe had I learned jazz things would be different. Just too hippie
I think finding an electric guitar tone you like is half the battle.

I've actually been thinking of getting vocal lessons again. But my vocals aren't what's holding my music making back, I gotta get to making the content and marketing etc. So trying to not spread myself too thin. But man, when Im a billionaire, you know for damn sure imma have a cello with a sparkly ball at the end.

Your video is an interesting concept. I do wonder though about switching genres each album. I get why, but as a consumer you'd have to let them know what to expect. That it's all about exploration. Because let's say your 2nd album pops off and goes viral for its hiphop. If you make your next album classical choir acapellas, you are essentially alienating your audience. Unless they know you pulling some weird shit from the beginning like 'I love robots' on netflix. You know what I mean? Feel like you'd lose momentum across time unless your audience expressly follows you because they want to see you explore in every direction.
But who am I to say anything, Im just a dude replying on the internet

Yeah that counts. Have you found a boopbox community on reddit?
