Genuine question. Seemed to be super hyped and now I don't hear much about it. Steam charts have 300k as highest player count but now it's around 60-80k players.

No, it did not, and concurrent players is a very bad metric to use for something like this. They sold north of 3.5M copies. At $40 each, that's about $100M. Even looking at concurrent players, right now, at 98k players, it's the 14th most played game on Steam, so with the information you did use, as a paid game and not free to play, it would be hard to say that it flopped.

Pretty much every single game has a massive drop off in concurrent players after the initial spike. That's just how humans work, not everyone who tries something will like it.

Even if you like it, there's a high chance you're not playing it for more than a month.

I bounce around and go through "phases" of games I like to play quite regularly. Sometimes I like boomer shooters, sometimes I like platformers, sometimes I like RPGs, sometimes I like a weird mix of all of them.

                From the Wiki:

                https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elden_Ring_Nightreign

"released for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on May 30, 2025. It received generally positive reviews and sold 3.5 million units.[1]"

So, first, it doesn't matter how many concurrent players it has, it sold 3.5 million so it's not a flop.

Second, it was released on 5 platforms, you are looking at concurrent players on Steam only.

Depends on who you ask. Square might have projected 15m sales on the first day, in which case it did.

Kind of? It's a 73% drop in Conccurent players though and it hasn't even been out that long.

Selling doesn't mean anything to me. Companies don't make a game just so people can play it for one day. (Well... Some do.. (the day before))

There are LOTS of games that sold really well and then just died right away.

Typically, that's how you'd measure a flop. Seeing as you only need two other people to play, this game isn't dead as long as there are 3 people who want to play and a server running to facilitate them.

Still top 10 right now in concurrent players on steam. Every other game on the tier list is a free to play game or Dune(with less players than Nightreign) and Dune is a big IP with a multimillion movie trilogy. Calling it flop is absurd.

I like your question but you should formulated better, that's why it's getting downvoted.

Short Answer: No, it's not a flop.
Long answer: Many have given the meaning of a flop so I will not repeat. What you want to know it seems is if ERN succeeded as a multiplayer and I get the feeling you are comparing it to FPS, but they have very different markets. ERN made good money and satisfied the Soul-Like gamers Multiplayer addiction. Elden Ring is also not massive when compared to Counter Strike but in proportion ERN is very successful. The learning curve for the Souls-Like games is usually also a detractor for many.

                                No?

80-60k players is still incredibly successful. I don't think Nightreign was ever expected to see those kinds of numbers given the nature of the game.

You see, that's your problem. Companies don't make games for any other reason than money. Since there are no microtransactions or subscriptions available, they quite frankly don't care if you ever play the game after you've purchased it.

They moved a lot of units already and considering it's only a side game with reused assets, they made a profit. Therefore, the game by all means is a success for them, even if nobody would play anymore.

Concurrent players also shouldn't influcene future sales by much, since you only need 3 people at a time

I wouldn't say it's a flop but it is kinda light on content. I finished they game on week 1 played a bit more on week 2 where nothing changed I then uninstalled it. I'm back right now because they've released new content though.

Most games do have huge concurrent player falloffs pretty quickly helldivers 2 currently has a 24hr peak of 63k and I wouldn't call it a flop. Path of Exile 2 currently has a 24hr peak of 17k players, I wouldnt call it a flop. Somehow Dragon age veilguard was at the top of the steam charts in week 1 and we all know it was a flop. I'm not sure steam charts are a particularly useful metric. Fromsoft seems very happy with the amount of players in NightReign and that's probably the most useful metric we have.

Genuine question. Seemed to be super hyped and now I don't hear much about it. Steam charts have 300k as highest player count but now it's around 60-80k players.

It's a niche game in an already niche genre. Sure, Elden Ring was the first one to crack into the mainstream. But seen as FromSoft somehow managed to sell Souls fans a network test disguised as a game I'd say even if it flipped it'd be a financial success for them.
