I'm wondering if anyone on here is estranged from their immediate family and what was their experience explicitly when their parents died and had to deal with inheritance?
My parents are divorced and my father (and whatever family there is left) I have in recent years walked away from. Occasionally, I ponder on what happens in regards to inheritance when he dies between my stepmother, full brother and half brother. I don't see any of them. I'm assuming I won't be on his will but I am not interested in any inheritance.

Has anyone else been in this situation and how did you approach it? What actually happens? Would I be contacted by a lawyer or something?

I'm also estranged from a large portion of my family. I'm also not expecting inheritance but not sure what happens. It's probably the job of the will executor to contact and transfer any assets.

Depends where you live. In bc family law is asinine and wills apparently means nothing because estranged kids can claim inheritance anyways

I'm estranged. Not typing out the long story. My Mom is still living in FL. My sister (1:3 siblings) lives with her and cares for Mom.

A few years back I was able to convince my Mom to give me, her son, her diamond ring from her wedding set. I've turned that stone into a stud earring which I wear continuously.

I don't want anything else. I just hope my sister follows my Mom's after death wish.

She wants to be cremated and ashes spread along a beach that she used to live near and visit very often. Hopefully, when time comes, my sister will discuss plans and I'll do my best to make sure my Mom's wish is followed. Yes, I've advised my Mom to have things in writing. And I'm pretty sure my sister is aware of Mom's final plan.

My wife cut ties with her family years ago. I hope we don't get any inheritance from them. If we do, it will go to a charity that supports victims of child abuse.

That's good for you to do that.

It's sad how these things happen but can also be for the best.
