just a heads up, the instance you're on is pretty controversial.
Controversial? How come? I’m new to the Fediverse so I’d love to learn as much as I can.

Just got here and started a regional community for the American Midwest. Come on down!
https://lemmy.world/c/midwestThere is an entire instance for the Midwest. Have a look to check if they already have an active community

Sub.rehab is super outdated and https://fediverser.network/ is easier and crowdsourced.
Thanks, hadn't seen that one before

I was fed up with reddit and looking to make a change that won't put money in spez's pocket, arrived a few days ago.

You only need the one account, you don't need to sign into other instances.
There can be some weirdness on the web version where if someone uses the wrong type of link then you maybe redirected away and can't interact as you're not logged in.
For example:
How can I link a post without redirecting?

Glad it is increasing.

I thought the whole point of Lemmy was that it didn't matter what instance you joined. Can I move my account, or do I need to make a new one on a new instance?
So, the no matter what instance thing isn't really true. Moderation is different per instance, mods can remove comments locally.
Account migration is planned, but not there yet. -

Well it doesn't, but that instance has a... reputation... So some people might have that entire instance blocked. You'd have to create a new account elsewhere to move over

I explained a bit here: https://lemm.ee/post/58018253/18825295
But I'll go into more detail : )
lemmy.ml is the instance run by the lemmy developers, who are tankies. Tankies are people who support authoritarian regeims such as the soviet union, or north korea.
As such, they sometimes remove anti-china or pro-ukraine posts/comments.
They also sometimes bridgade threads.
As an example, check [email protected]

What's an "active user"? Can I just up vote things I like, do I need to leave comments like this, or must I get involved in senseless flame-wars?

Lemmy.ml is very pro Russia/pro communism

As a recommendation, https://lemm.ee/ is good.

The admins and mods of .ml are huge Tankies and censor all content critical of China/Russia/NK and will deny they're even dictatorships let alone that they enforce censorship or any other violation of basic human rights
[email protected] has a bunch of content documenting what they get up to that you might miss if you're not in the modlog, but ironically for a group that complains about censorship they block that comm from all .ml users at the instance level so you'll have to look at it in a roundabout way.
lemmy.world/c/[email protected] should work
