Everyone knows that if you don't eat the cork then you aren't getting your money's worth.

It just needs to be clear and set close to the max fill line. If it's low and/or dark, it wasn't done right.

Alternatively, if you're in a place dedicated to oil changes, you can assume it wasn't done right.

The last time I went to an oil change place, I wanted it done because I was leaving town the next day. I usually have my regular mechanic (who is excellent and honest; a rare breed) do it, or I do it myself.

The ten minute oil change took an hour and change. They tried to upsell me on a bunch of bullshit and gave me stink eye when I politely told them I just need a conventional oil change, thanks.

They overfilled it by about .75 of a quart. I had to take care of that myself before the aforementioned road trip. The car only holds about four quarts in total.

They charged twice as much as my mechanic who knows what he's doing and gives a shit. Never again.

I miss working the pit. No customer interaction, I knew what filter and where as the car rolled in, and it was smooth.
I do not miss the little burns, and being covered in oil and sweat, and the occasional smashed hand from the diff plate bolt suddenly coming loose.

I was the weirdo that could change a filter with my left hand, while eating my lunch sandwich with my right hand totally clean.

There were still oddball incidents though, like magnetic oil plugs getting stuck magnetically and spraying my face with hot oil 😞

It appears that cylinder 3 is now locked up, but we can have a couple helpers push your car out. Put it in neutral Karen..

That’s okay, I didn’t like that cylinder anyway.

Idk why I was expecting anything other than what that comm was, but I’m pleased to have been wrong.

Transmission fluid is the real “I have no idea what that means” thumbs up.

Because it should hopefully always be clear but it depends where….. and how warm…. And how clean the dipstick was….

(I recently had transmission issues and omfg there isn’t even a light on my car for low transmission fluid wtf??)

They should not have it near the max fill line right after a change. Certainly not all the oil has settled and more will. Especially if they put oil in the filter before adding it like they should. If it's near max, then I guarantee more than max is actually inside there. There's a reason there's a range that's acceptable.

We're going to have to balance your engine then, so we're gonna have to remove piston #3 and #6 so it runs sorta smooth.

                    Good luck 🤞

Remember when you could lick the cake mix off the spoon as a kid? Yeah, the mechanics won't let me do that.

A lot still do but they’re not what you’d traditionally consider a dipstick.

Why I change my own oil. Not because I save money--generally don't even before your time is factored in--but because I know how to put on an oil pan bolt without cross threading it.

First time I changed the oil iny car, aged about 17, I put in about 10L then got fed up because it still wasn't filling up all the way to the fill cap.

Ah, red falcon, I don't miss you.
