Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don’t overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don’t post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don’t troll nor incite hatred. Don’t look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia’s List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don’t question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add “/s” when you’re being sarcastic (and don’t use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don’t evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don’t post uncontextualized images or videos, and don’t start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

  • on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons)
  • on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera

Unless they’re the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any “thinktank” type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don’t link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don’t show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

They started Iris2 back when the full scale invasion started. There is another European sat constellation (I don't remember the name) that could be a stopgap. Beyond of that using OneWeb sats is discussed.

"They don't sell is a bit of a tired outlook" - they do sell and they would sell even better if there was a bit more push behind the program again. There are also very rational reasons why EVs make a lot of sense: Most of European brands' sales are in China and the Chinese leadership are not going to stop the pro-EV course, because it's the best way to ensure local prosperity. Hence, the European companies need to be focused on beating the Chinese at EVs. Losing the Chinese market means massively decreasing economies of scale and ultimately losing all other foreign markets as well. Besides a few outliers like the UK and Norway, Europe is poor in fossil energy and it won't reach fossil autarky. However, you can easily run EVs (primarily) on European solar/wind energy. This would massively decrease Russian/US/Saudi oil/gas imports and massive decrease wealth transfers to these countries. EVs are also way more energy-efficient, meaning you can run on less energy overall. There are massive public health benefits associated with reduced emissions. I haven't mentioned climate change, and granted, there are more effective ways to combat that, chiefly reducing the number of cars and increasing the availability of public transit. But given the current (insane) predicament that economies needs to grow forever, EVs are a way forward.

That seems like BS to my amateur brain. Most analysts concluded that a sailboat of divers would not have been able to handle the depths. Ukraine was the most motivated for the attack, but Mearshimer seemed certain that the US was involved. We're not even certain that the Russians didn't compromise it themselves after the Germans declared that they were not going to use it.
  • This sounds like a very shitty deal.

Great article! I like the premise but if the analysis is based on a picture from last year, it's kind of outdated considering how the geopolitical space changed in one year Meanwhile, support for EU accession is rising in Norway and Iceland Kind of a cheap conclusion without sources, polls in Iceland: [image: 130a71aa-44f2-4d96-8721-a64eae7c08ad.png]

They'd be able to help secure Europe, could get some sales to EU countries and such, but I see this as a project that would deal directly with established armies (and countries' defence budgets) rather than going through the EU.

Every elected official takes an oath of office - what if we make not lying to the public part of that oath, and made violating that oath a felony with a specific mandatory penalty?

Where would military equipment to rival the one from the US come from? We don't have it yet. Absolutely no question. Not really sure why folks are arguing otherwise. Russian capacity to produce military equipment far outstrips Europe. EU have been pumping grant money into building capacity since 2022 but I'm not sure how far it's come. How we're not on a war footing since the invasion and especially since it became clear that at best the US election was a toss up I will never understand.

The information I could find, e.g. on Wikipedia seems to confirm that only few PzH-2000 were lost, but a lot units are undergoing maintenance, as there is lots of wear on the loading mechanism and the lock, as the Ukrainians are "going the extra mile" and pushing the PzH-2000 to it's limits in order to stay out of reach of the russians while operating. This indicates that they are using the EFRB-BB ammunition with 40 km maximum reach and the rocket extended V-LAP ammunition allowing 56 km reach. As I understood, these can not be used in M109 howitzers below the A5 variant. They are limited to ~30 km reach. Also the shoot and scoot ability of the modern howitzers is also an advantage to the older M109 variants before A6 "Paladin". (Ukraine got 18 M109A6 "Paladin" units from the US.) https://www.merkur.de/politik/verschleiss-deutsche-panzerhaubitze-2000-waffenlieferungen-ersatzteile-ukraine-krieg-zr-93291864.html

Well I'm definitely not sitting here thinking "mission accomplished" after right wing and extreme right wing parties got at total of ~57% of the vote
