Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.

Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted. This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate. We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history. This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you’re submitting before posting to see if it’s already been posted. We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed. No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don’t share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine. We don’t want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

Awesome, thanks! This is literally the first time I've seen this petition, so I appreciate the extra info. I also wasn't sure if it was part of Stop Killing Games or a separate initiative (looks like it's at the 26min mark of the first video). I'm in the US (looks like Ross Scott is too?) so I obviously can't sign it, but I am very much interested on the outcome since it'll likely impact me. If it's strictly limited to SP games, that's a lot less interesting since that can easily be region locked (so it would just be the same as piracy for me), but if it also forces release of server code, then I'm getting something I couldn't before. For US people, there's still hope. It looks like Louis Rossmann is pissed off about this as well, but from a regular software perspective (Odyssee and YouTube), so he might try something similar to what he did with Right to Repair. He has a bit wider reach and probably a very different audience, and maybe he can help get something going in the US. Thanks for the links, I'll see what I can do to spread the word.

I haven't tried yet. I think there are videos on YouTube showing Moonlight working well. Don't know about other apps. I've installed Steam Link expecting that WiFi 6 should give a good streaming experience.

Absolutely fair. An 8 year old game should not cost $90 all in. I dont dispute that. I just think the article is misleading as there is a lot of talk about $90 switch 2 games, which turned out not to be true, and it creates anger that is misplaced. Even if the reality isn't far from that lie. I do, however, think it's an interesting thought experiment to come at it from another angle. Imagine the article was "8 year old AAA game and DLC at a huge discount" and the article said things like: breath of the wild was ahead of its time on release the graphics still look great thanks to the cell shading and art style unique gameplay elements and a modern feeling combat system vast open world with expansive storyline on par with modern games currently only $50 on this deal, a bargain considering everything you get for that price From this point of view i think you would agree that anyone would argue its worth more than $50 and that its a great deal despite being 8 years old. Nintendo games should definitely come down in price over time, but the point is its just so easy to spin something however you want if you use the right words.

But if I buy the upgrade pack, what will happen to the DLCs when I play on the Switch 2?

Wow, there is so much misinformation in this thread... I'm not going to include references for the following statements, but just as a couple of pointers for further research: Pong came out in 1972, not 1978. Hunt the Wumpus was created in 1973, after Pong. There is no "the first video game" as it is almost impossible to find the definitive first example. Turing had written a chess algorithm before there even was a computer that could run it. Tennis for Two was not the first video game, whichever way you see it: there were several graphical games for the Whirlwind project that came out at least 3-4 years before TfT. Tennis for Two was also not Pong's precursor. That would be Computer Space, which came out in 1971, a year before Pong, and was created by the creator of Pong, Nolan Bushnell. (Edit: yes, well, it was a precursor, but not "the precursor to Pong".) I'm not blaming anyone here: it is very hard to keep up with new research at the moment. Many things people thought were true even one or two years ago might quickly be superseded by current findings. But please don't just quote things from memory when trying to correct statements. Incidentally, the first rage quit did have something to do with Pong: There is a fantastic video of Ralph Baer, the creator of the Brown Box and therefore the spiritual predecessor to Pong, rage quitting in 1969 at a demonstration he had organised himself.

You think they're going to sell repackaged SNES and N64 games for less than that?(Edit: incorrect, they are in fact less than $80) How bout switch 1 games? Those are "modern" so significantly cheaper, still legal to have a backup, still legal to emulate....and will be run in an emulator on the switch 2, no native backwards compatibility. As for switch 2 games....just waiting for a while getting them 2nd hand means they'll be cheaper, if you can actually get a hardcopy, and all the things I just said still apply....

Exactly, the only real first party game was BOTW (and that also released on the Wii u). There were some smaller games, like 12 switch/snipperclips/fast rmx, but the switch on release (and most of its life) was struggling for games.

My friend was unable to update to windows 11 due to the TPM requirements and looking to switch to linux. I upgraded my CPU and said they should buy my old one. They finally said OK and asked if I could help them install it before they switched to Linux. I installed the CPU and they never switched to Linux because now they have a CPU that meets the TPM requirements. Windows users really hate change. Microsoft will force them to update and the users will whine but 1 week later they will be used to it then they will stick on windows 11 till EoL.

You don't lose functionality, you can use SteamOS like a laptop as well. Desktop mode literally puts you in a KDE Plasma desktop environment.
