Raspberry pi with OSMC (Kodi on Linux) OSMC remote control (A Vero is good too.) Large storage drive You can get a plug-in to watch YouTube, you can watch local movies, you can build your own media library using local software and it'll be small enough to carry it around in your pocket.

my two biggest concerns are accessibility, and privacy. I want it to be both, accessible, and private, card readers accomplish this to a significant, and universally accepted degree. I can understand a subscription service being based on something a little different, or an auto charge mechanism similar to tesla super chargers, but that should be an option, not the sole means of interacting with it, because then it lends to really shitty behavior on the side of the company operating it. The subscription thing is understandable, but the unfortunate reality is that this is going to be a contract law problem, rather than any other problem, you are legally agreeing to a monthly payment model at some point in the checkout, otherwise it wouldn't be legal. Shitty laws and consumer protection problems really. My credit card does rotate the numbers a bit but I keep meaning to find one that can generate different virtual cards per service so I can turn a virtual card off when they get abusive with it or when they leak it it's funny actually, i wonder if checks will see a comeback, with all the shitty services that exist now, it's a very explicit way of paying for a transaction. I don't really have a huge problem with auto charging systems, most of the time banks can even unfuck some really funny shit if you need them to, though that gets into a different world very quickly. The subscription problem is an interesting one though, my solution is just avoid them at all costs, because it's a parasitic drain. So far i've succeeded in that. Also having a minimal amount of subscriptions really helps you to keep them in check, because there are only so many that can exist.

That may be the best option right now, but it's still a far cry from an upstreamed device They aren't able to support devices longer than Qualcomm and Google maintain the random out-of-tree drivers for a chipset, and even state such in their "legacy support" for harm reduction

Literally nothing in the article except what appears to be sane company policy. Of course you fire people who leak confidential company information. Lemmy: "But it must be evil if they're hiding it!" Well, in FB's case, it may well be, but you can't run a mom-and-pop store with every communication open to the world. FFS people, it's no different than "don't talk to cops", no different. Anything you say can and will be held against you. Stunning lack of insight from such a privacy advocating community.

Because scientists are normal people, and probably a higher proportion of them than normal are tech nerds. People don't have only one interest. The board members of fediscience.org are biosystems scientists and forensic linguists.

That comment came from a child, sounds like my 10-yo making shit up. Worst case, the very worst, is you lose a solid chunk of foot, and that's so rare as to not worry about. Think on it. If that thing starts eating you from the toes up, you're going to pull free before it gets much in there, even if "pulling free" means no more toes. I did hear the Crocs are bad on escalators. I could see something heavy like combat boots sucking more in, but those are the kinda shoes that don't get sucked in.

A shitload of people are being fired from the government, I imagine plenty of them would be worthwhile replacements. It's just that training takes time. I was working as the employee for a contractor in IT/infrastructure to a global giant up until a month ago. My former co-workers talk to me regularly, they are getting screwed without me. Yet the company won't call me up because pride. They wanted me to come back as an independent contractor at a lower wage. I won't because pride. It's fun. I gotta get a job soon though. Right now they are paying two people a bit more than half what I was getting and they are fucking shit up because there's no real training, let alone apprenticeship. Sink or swim.
