I have a similar, albeit slightly less doomer, view currently. Focus on the safety and good of your community and loved ones, and remember that nothing is guaranteed to us. Do the necessary good steps like voting and protesting, but don't be naïve enough to think that's the whole of necessary action or a magic bullet to solve the problems. Do the good, but focus on the real workable action in your direct sphere of influence. Cheers.

The Pilot was ugly as fuck, but from what I've heard they were basically indestructible to a certain point....then there was almost no reviving them. Been considering getting a decommissioned ambulance and changing my trading name to Dr. Stone.... Ambulance is basically set up for a mobile shop, 240 and 110, loads of drawers and cupboards, tie-down points and either a fold down ramp or a hydraulic tailgate. Ambulance services are always refreshing their fleet, they get worked hard, but there's a maintenance standard so even with 180k miles on the Odo they're typically not running poorly. Idk...maybe I'm talking myself into it, maybe it's actually a good idea.

Seconding this, while I have the option for multi-gig at my address, I don't have the need, once you get around gigabit upload speeds life is fine. I can upload hours of uncompressed gameplay to YouTube in under an hour, and that's limited mostly by their ingest speeds (≈300Mbps) and not my end, so that's plenty. With all that said, the option for consumers is great, I'm thankful I have that choice, wish more people had it too.

I wouldn't use any of those other features. I just browse by top all 1/6/12 hr (which piefed lacks) and the theme isn't great either. How does it offer either of those things? I see an 'attitude %' on hover, and it says it has 'strong moderation tools'. But I mean 100% community run. Subscribers have to vote on bans or something. And proof of personhood verification tests.

My desktop is still running a 1060, I got it when the 3000 series had just dropped. I've got my pal's old OCd 1080 sitting on the sidelines waiting for me to get all the bits for water-cooling put together. The 1060 runs everything I've thrown at it. It might not run new new things at photorealistic quality, but stable frames and good enough quality that it doesn't look like shit. Once I've got a loop put together for the 1080 the 1060 is going into my media server to take over transcoding from the 970 I had before the 1060.

Open source software doesn't, by definition, place restrictions on usage. The license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specific field of endeavor. Clauses like "you can use this software freely except in specific circumstances" fly against that. Open source licenses usually have very little to say about what the software should be used for, and usually just as an affirmation that you can use the software for whatever you want.

I discovered a similar issue. PC desk was using 8-9W when the PC was turned OFF! My power strip was taking a bit under 1W (the little light, old), two smart bulbs as well but I'll allow those losses. An older Logitech speaker setup (2+1) was taking 6-7W, turned off! Crazy.. and illegal if it were made today (in EU). So this is completely wasted energy in my opinion.. started disconnecting the whole desk now. Why would it not know? It certainly “knows” that it’s an LLM and it presumably “knows” how LLMs work, so it could piece this together if it was capable of self-reflection.
