I don't really know how to feel about this.
Was it decreed by an absolute narcissist for no reason other than the kind of blatant arrogance Americans are notorious for? Absolutely.
Was it also completely legal? As far as I can tell. It's not really these companies' place to resist map name changes, it's the citizens' and our representatives'.
Does it have anything at all to do with fascism? No.
All he can dictate is what official American maps call it. But he can't make everyone else rename it, Apple and Google did not need to rename it they could have ignored him who has no legal power to do anything to them but they are kissing his bronzed arse so of course they did.

To be fair, the entire history of humanity is full of exactly that. These are mostly just aimed at and recognized by the US. Same as Russia currently renaming occupied villages. Nobody else recognizes those, it’s just not that special or important at this point, with all of the other shit going on.
Ultimately, the names of places change. All the time. And will continue to change. It’s just what we do as humans. Somebody uses force and swings their dick around and locally others have to either swallow or punch the fucker. Elsewhere people fight similar fights and care very little about the other dickswingers far away.

You have to access it from a US IP address to get the new name.
Scared me for a sec, though I had an IP leak as I VPN to Switzerland but remembered I explicitly allowed Maps to be routed through a US VPN.

You should abandon Apple for Linux anyways. Apple doesn't care about you, your privacy, or anything but them making more money, from you. This has been proven time and time again by evidence and whistleblowers.
Eh, out of all my own traffic I’ve MITM’d it’s mostly been third-party SDKs in apps doing creepy shit.
Down to hate on Gulf of America but when it comes to privacy it’s debatable.

Wrote App Store review, then deleted maps. Installed Organic Maps to replace.
is there an easy way to export all my map markers from google to organic? I've saved a lot of locations over the years.

That’s odd; my Apple Maps says “Gulf of Mexico” and searching for “Gulf of America” shows 0 results.
Unlike Google Maps/Earth….

From a UK or German IP address, Google maps has it as Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)

hmm I wondered this too. I have a ton of starred places as well as some custom lists. I wasn't able to find anything to do it, but would also be interested in this.

But google shows this imaginary trump name around the globe, not just in America. That is different to how google handles the fantasy names for lands China and Russia claim they are theirs..

I've been struggling without public transportation in Organic. It kinda works? Like it shows the path but doesn't actually show the stops or station names

Exactly. Just use OpenStreetMap and move on. It's still the Gulf of Mexico for me. I use Organic Maps.

I hope it becomes usable. If they hold there promise. Linux Wayland apps could be run through emulation layer, FreeBSD apps would run native and many MacOS apps should work out of the box.

As someone from the outside, you wouldn't even see the US specific naming. If complaining in a bug report about the fact and threatening to abandon the platform in favour of Linux is all you can do, man, don't bother xD.
