Canada's Justin Trudeau announces retaliatory tariffs following Trump's executive order

Maybe they realize Trump is the enemy, not the rest of the US. How are they retaliating for a trade war based on personal spite, with something that won’t work until after he’s gone? Why do something that affects both sides over the long term, when this could easily disappear if Trump is distracted or finds a way to yell “WIN”

I don’t think Americans realize that long term this is not good for you
Of course we do, or half of us do. The other half just want to bully someone and chant “USA! USA!”
So far I’m hoping there’s a pattern of “doing something spiteful that will harm ourselves, but moving onto the next thing at the first hint of resistance”. The new administration is just doing a speed run of scapegoats and might be on to the next before you can say “WTF”. I’m hoping the booze will be enough: hurt jack daniels right in maga country, until we’re back to focussing on abusing immigrants and people who speak Spanish

excluding Canadian energy at 10%
Dammit, importing more hydro was a big part of my state’s clean energy plan.

this is a war
This is one persons tantrum. One person with way too many weapons.

Yes and that 1 person declared war.

Living through Brexit, I get all this.
It all only holds if there are alternative suppliers that are cheaper than the new escalated price for the goods you placed tariffs on. Canada and the US have the (mis)fortune to have extremely easy transportation of goods between them, but expensive transportation of good to/from anywhere else. That's the geography and there's no getting away from it, just like the UK can't float away from Europe. America isn't going to stop importing (to imagine a bullshit example) lumber from Canada because shipping it from anywhere else is impractical and domestic supply won't be able to deal with the shortfall. Similar for Canada.
Both sides are engaging in massive acts of self harm, and Canada trying to go punch for punch isn't a winning strategy. Canada has to respond in a smarter way than a reflexive mirroring move.

Yeah, I like both option.

according to Al Jazeera it's just the USA?
Google announced on Monday that its online mapping platform, Google Maps, will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America for users in the US.
just "Gulf of Mexico" for me here in Toronto

Y'know, except for the part where Trudeau is saying it shouldn't be this way and free trade is beneficial to both economies... but yeah, it's both sides that are doing this for malicious self interest.

So THAT'S the "Great" that they want to make America again..

The article literally says
- Google Maps will display both Gulf of Mexico and Gulf of America to users who are neither in the US nor in Mexico.

That's fair. If someone punches you, you punch back. You don't get beaten up in the moment in hopes that you get to jump them a week from now. The "both" option suggested below may be better but that still means it's regular everyday people getting fucked over with higher prices in CA over something they had nothing to do with (I can still sympathize with the US but one can also argue the US voted him in, Canada did not).

sorry, that hole got patched a long time ago.
a spouse can sponsor someone's application for Permanent residence. but that will take at minimum a year. and the path to citizenship is far longer . requiring PR as a first step regardless

I know this is a joke but some points that should be made.
that loophole got patched a long time ago. its not that simple.
Married spouses can sponsor for PR. But the PR system works off a point system, and may not necessarily be granted PR.
You have to have PR for several years. (I think its as high as 7) before you can apply for citizenship.furthermore, Americans should know, That unless you rescind your American citizenship. (which costs a lot of money, they make it prohibitavely expensive). The United States does not recognize dual citizenship. They dont care if you're the King of Sweden. if you are an american citizen, that overrides all others. and they will consider you subject to their laws, juristiction, and prosecution. (and ask you be extradited if need be)

Not trying to get into an in-depth discussion (because I know nothing) but from the outside looking in, going tit for tat and hoping the next guy's better (or that Trump doesn't make himself President for life) doesn't seem like a good long term strategy. Tariffs may be necessary (convo above) but ultimately are going to hurt the people of the issuing country the most and at a time when most are struggling already.
Trump's not the US and people in the US definitely shouldn't get punished for his crap (unless they actively voted red, abstaining...sucks but I get it tbh), but he's just proved he's willing to start a trade war with friendly nations and the US has proved it's willing to hand the country over to someone like that. Twice. Trying to find better firends (in terms of trade deals and whatnot) seems like the smart move here. Every other nation having to jump through hoops any time this guy wants to earn brownie points with his supporters doesn't seem like a good foundation for a trade agreement to me.

Love it, but CMUSA is better because alphabetical.
But also I get the feeling he'll take Mexico coming before the US personally

Its not a joke, I am 100% serious.
I am disabled and live off of SSDI.
Spent most of 2023 homeless.
Maybe I would only qualify for residency via marrying a Canadian, but if Trump cuts back SSDI, in addition to all the economic damage he's going to cause to the US economy, I will die starving, on the street.
As of right now, its still possible to recieve SSDI while living abroad.... but who knows what will happen.

It's hilarious because if it were 10% tariffs across the board, the discourse would be very much the same.
