This would have taken two minutes in Photoshop or even MSPaint.

Wouldn't be surprised if YouTube and Netflix don't use FFmpeg. I am pretty sure they use custom built hardware encoders. Pretty sure Netflix has a lot of blog posts about building their own encoding methods

I take it you're not a big fan of censorship, so can you kindly tell me what the word is? (I've heard something fun happens if a .ml user writes "porn")

Pornhub? I don't think .ml censors "porn" (I can see your comment just fine), just some slurs/offensive words afaik.

Edit: And I can see my own comment just fine.

FFmpeg doesn't deserve to be such a tiny block. Nothing else comes close to matching its stability and simplicity. There's a reason it's practically part of the foundation for all media software out there.

Absolutely - very powerful and capable, even just from the Linux command line.

Just don’t wank too much, or you are going to have health issues.

Pray tell, which health issues would those be?

Tiny block in the grand scheme of things.
This picture doesnt work if you replace the stick with the huge boulder.

Maybe if you visualize it as the foundation of a building.
                    Then it makes sense.

They either do use it or a heavily modified fork to fit their usecase.

But I am pretty certain I read about their usage on it.

I think he was answering the question "how good does a video player need to be?", because many of those points don't apply to pornhub, which also goes more into the site behind it than the player proper

Yes, some do, but it isn't an incredibly small number given the quantity of companies that rely on open source technology.

They usually don't but some do. I'm only cherry picking this because I don't know much about Big Tech and FOSS. Bootstrap was developed in Twitter, React is maintained by Facebook/Meta, AngularJS was maintained by Google in the past but it's now discontinued. Google also has Summer of Code. I'm not a Big Tech shill but the larger ones do make some contributions.

You're talking about absolutely massive companies who represent their own shared interests. And just by volume, they will produce an open source projects through engineering culture variation within a company itself.

And represent only a fractional part of the tech workforce and companies that don't contribute back to open source.

okay, let me elaborate: the hardware acceleration requires custom software to interact with it yes, BUT, they probably still use ffmpeg and just pass -vcodec custom_thing to it
