Advice for quick and easy pet can with remote access
-
Respectfully, I really dont want this thread to be about my cat so much as the question at hand.
-
Does zoneminder handle secure remote connections on it's own somehow? Or will I need a separate solution to access my LAN while away?
-
Reolink cameras seem to be cheap and privacy friendly. You can access them through the app and when you have time you can also use them without any proprietary stuff, as far as I know.
Quick, cheap and easy and with potential for more fiddling down the road.

I was honestly leaning more and more toward an off the shelf solution like this. I kindof agree with you about it not being worth it to use a fiddly roll-your-own setup like this, especially with such short notice. Plug and play sounds really attractive.
How do you like the Amcrest cameras and remote monitoring solution? Do they have a good reputation for security I hope? I'm afraid I'm completely in the dark about these types of security camera companies.

This actually sounds like it fits my priorities pretty solidly. I'll look into Reolink, thanks.

Got it, just concerned
I love cats

Got it in that case a tracker might be a better option. Some of those are very accurate like in house accurate. Movement is all you need to see

No, I’m summarizing their post where they make it obvious the trip is more important than the cat, thus Trip > Cat

I use solution listed above with zerotier for android and linux as network solution for private connection. I was also doing reverse proxy for zm but later I resigned in favour of static ips and direct connections (due to unrelated to zm issues but I remember configuration not being straightforward in case of reverse proxy)
Zmninja last I heard isn't developed anymore but should still be working.
Cameras with exposed rtsp are best for this solution. Do you need wireless or wired? What cameras you have?
I am not sure if a week will be enough to troubleshoot luxurious things like access over domain (unless you have experience
) but if simplified enough it can be all set up pretty quickly.
I am available for further help with this issue.

We aren't sacrificing our cat for a vacation. She'll be well taken care of while we're away, we just wanted to set up a simple method of checking on her when the urge strikes us without bothering the cat sitters to drop what they're doing and check on her at any hour of the day or night.
