So, anyone got any better card games? Preferably digital tbh, they can do things that physical can't. I used to play a game called infinity wars that really took advantage of being digital with the potential to have way more going on at once. Zenonzard was also really cool, but died right after i tried it.

Ah, the 90s cash-cow is still getting milked, I see. What a poor slop of slack-jawed bastards: shelling out for shiny flotsam w/ inflated valuation that can be instantly erased at corpo whim — the same bullshit tactics GW's been peddling in plastic for years before. (and still is, yes)

FFS, I noped out during Antiquities when I saw what a POS "card crack" model it was. How is this still alive?! 🤢

I spent a lot of money on 4th edition because I was told there were still Black Lotus by the card shop owner.

Cracking MtG packs though... booster drafts were so much fun with a small group.

Not many FLGS owners I've met in the last 20 years would've tried that sheisty tactic. Sorry that was your experience.

To be fair to your memory of it, imagine what would've happened had you pulled it from the booster? Nevermind the nat-20 IRL that would've been 🤌🏼, I'm talking about the selling it too soon or hemming & hawing over it until the stress clinched it (see: the former). You're better off without that Black Lotus, most likely.

Like they say, "The story's not in the crits." 🤘🏼

I was literally gambling at that point. Though I honestly just wanted one so I could sell or trade for Juzam Djinns. All because I got absolutely wrecked by them at the little tourneys they held at the shop.

They shut down abruptly and I remember starting to go to other local shops and quickly learning they deserved to be closed.

Pokemon TCG Pocket is a decent, light weight version of Pokemon TCG, shrunk down to fit mobile units and shorter battles (i.e. only 20-card deck, 3 points to win, no prize cards, energy gets generated 1 per turn instead of using cards).

As a previously big MTG-player, PTCGP feels pretty good, though it's nowhere near the complexity and deep game which MTG is.

mtgs lack of Original UB, is what people are complaining on the sub, but mtg is looking to get money by promoting other IPs.

i play the shitty Live, BUT Its beginning to enshittify, rather than dealing with the IRL scalping and pokevesters, they are locking alt-art content behind a 6month wait, plus i ehard they were getting rid of code cards from most packs, so they are trying to entice more purchases, rather than play for free.

I kinda like the pocket version so far. Even though it has obvious tactics to ensure that players log in daily to avoid the FOMO on free packs, as well as tactics to push microtransactions. I haven't paid a dime for the game, and I consistently finish collecting all the top meta decks within a week or two of each set release. If you want to stay on top at all times, I guess you'd have to drop some money, but it's absolutely not required.

How'd they change it to ruin it? I only played for a few months after it released

I find it amusing that MtG got so old and bloated that they just said "fuck it" and sold out to as many profitable franchises as they could find.

                                    lack of Original UB

What does this mean? Universes Beyond are explicitly borrowed IPs, as in, they're outside the normal MTG universe.

They do have original IPs too. So far this year, they had:

                                    • Innistrad Remastered - largely reprints of older Innistrad-related MTG sets
                                    • Aetherdrift - completely new MTG IP
                                    • Tarkir: Dragonstorm - Dragon revisit to Tarkir plane, w/ focus on dragons

And their next set is Edge of Eternities, which is yet another new MTG IP, their first space-themed set.

So, 4 MTG sets, 3 of them with mostly new cards, and two completely new planes. That's pretty rad IMO.

For the rest of the year, there are two more UB sets, so altogether there will be 3 UB and 4 MTG sets.

In the past, they had something like 4 sets each year, so we're basically seeing UB being added w/o anything being taken away.

My main complaint is that they have too many sets, and I'd be fine with them switching one or two MTG sets for UB. I found the FF set really fun, especially in draft, and I'm excited for EoE, though I wish there was more time between sets. I'm also not happy w/ the price of FF, but it looks like prices will come down a bit for EoE (at least their pre-release prices are more or less normal again).

I love MTG, but I will not collect the cards. I have a few Commander decks to play with my kids, and I like playing draft w/ friends or online.

I've always liked the gameplay and limited strategy, and never liked the collecting/trading aspect. Even as a kid, we got a bunch of low cost cards and made fun decks to play against each other. I hate playing standard or any of the 60-card constructed formats, I stick to limited and commander.

Because it's fun to play? People buying and hoarding cards because of their monetary value is certainly something that happens, but this is first and foremost a game.

Well, that's going to be the pre-release events, and they have multiple per game store on the first day. People also tend to preorder booster boxes and pick them up on that first day, and since everything was 20% more than normal, it makes sense. It was a highly anticipated set so tons of people played that don't normally play.

But remember, MTG is a worldwide thing and has millions of active users on Magic Arena, which should give an idea of the paper popularity.
