Do we have evidence that it truly was these officials behind the phone numbers in this group? Their opinions in the screenshots seem to alogn with their opinions IRL, but it just hit me that it would be relatively easy for someone to create a group with these names+profice pictures and 'accidentally' add in the journalist to decoy them.

The question is: Can the US government actually do something about this? The journalist had been invited, and probably no-one had reiterated to the group that the contents are top secret.

Once you hit a certain threshold of account age/edit count, you don't have to go through the draft submission process, you can just add an article to mainspace.
That said, unless you know what you're doing with writing an article, it'll probably get moved back to draftspace.
