While it may sound ridiculous, I actually think there is some healthy outcomes of practicing minimalist lifestyles. Gives me a peace of mind and avoids having to spend so much time on 'managing my things'.
Although I don't know if I can go full on 100% minimalism... I do like to do things

Going to concerts is not a hobby. That's an entertainment expense.

One of the reasons I'm glad I live in the city. There're free concerts in the parks. Free movies, sometimes. I can bike or train to the beach. There're meetups for all sorts of interests. When I lived in the suburbs, it was a wasteland. At best you could drive somewhere interesting.

I spent $50 on boots at the REI garage sale and went hiking every weekend. YMMV
you cant make me hike, i wont do it, I WON'T

Chess seems unique in the sports/games world because randomness plays absolutely no role in the outcome. It is purely the other person's brain squashing your brain down into a beige stain.

I bought a used school bus as a hobby. Now I'm a school bus driver so technically I get paid for my hobby. Except that dealing with middle-schoolers is definitely not a hobby.

I'm introverted and frugal. I sit in my chair and vibrate through realities.

Seriously. Suburbs are a hell I refuse to return to and which I wouldnāt wish on anyone. They just suck the life out of everything and you donāt even get anything for it. Hell, the houses arenāt even that cheap so you really just get to spend a lot of money on hot garbage.
āHey, wanna be isolated from all your friends while getting nothing in return except the blandest, cookie-cutter hellscape? Have I got the place for you! And fret not, itāll still cost you a staggering amount of money for even a small, shitty place so you better be fuckinā married if you want even a two-bedroom condo!ā

I take my daughter out to lunch and I just donāt eat now. $18 for a bowl of spaghetti bolognese, Iāll just drink water while she eats thanks
I aināt tryinā to blame ya, just to be clear but:
- Bahn MĆ is way cheaper and way more fun.
- Shawarma is usually pretty cheap and if itās still $20 for a plate you best believe youāll have a meal to share.
- The last tip could probably work for a whatever burrito placeās big burrito. They always got a really big one on the menu somewhere.
Italian food from a restaurant is such a ripoff. I can make a way better pasta with some ground beef or pork, store-bought sauce, and some random pasta, and I get the option to add other vegetables that they either donāt include or have in pathetically small amounts.

Buddhism has entered the chat!
Learning to sit still, in the quiet, and just being has been one of the biggest improvements to my mental health.
Of course, a bigger improvement to my mental health would be if we had an economy that worked for the people rather than for the rich...
While I agree, thereās certainly a difference between learning to be comfortable with stillness and literally not being able to afford to do anything. I take time for stillness every day but the fact that I canāt do anything else without feeling guilt is the problem.
Also, as much as I know you are trying to be helpful, Iām really sick and tired of being told that I have to make all the sacrifices. Pretty soon the next sacrifice Iāma make is gunna be to Khorne.

Fair enough. Itās not for everyone. Iāve heard it described as, āSuffering, surrounded by great beauty.ā

OTOH, if you can afford basic necessities, hobbies are just a rounding error on top of them.
Unless itās motorsports. Then the necessities of life are the rounding error.

Wait... Do most bus drivers own the bus?

People that don't have to pay rent every month have the luxury of pursuing expensive hobbies. Housing is so expensive that permanent homes are so far out of reach for many workers...
wrote last edited by [email protected]Are you aware that the vast, vast, majority of homes are mortgaged? We are paying a shit ton too dude...
