I’m no fan of metal but I’ve never liked the idea of gate keeping genres based on our personal preferences. There’s plenty of music out there that I love that I know others don’t care for and vice versa.

What's funny is that I crossposted it to the metalmemes community to a much warmer reception!
One of the flaws of lemmy is the number of people with a very limited sense of humor. Here we are in the shitposting comm, and half the comments are pearl clutchers, it's depressing.

I think that the language barrier is sometimes the culprit instead of the lack of humour. Still anything on a shitpost group should be treated as harmless by default

Fine, I'll elaborate:
You create a post in which you mark a list of sub genres as garbage and claim metalheads are dumb people, based on your own musical taste.
Claiming you are smarter because your taste in something is different than others is dumb and ignorant. Making fun of others for their taste is tasteless, childish and sad.
Whether or not you like metal, it can be well structured, musically complex and have highly political statements and well made lyrics. It had been an inspiration for many other musical genres. I wouldn't call that garbage and I wouldn't call the people listening to that stupid. It's not my favorite genre but I don't think I'm better because of that. I understand music and can recognize quality in music, even when it's not my preference.
