I can get a collective discount from my work, but it's not worth the trouble. Its only with one specific insurer and I already get a collective discount with my insurer, because I have all my insurances with the same insurer, which gives more discount than my work would offer with a different insurer.

It’s the health insurance that is offered by your employer in the United States.

Access to affordable healthcare is mostly dependent on decent employment. Many people who are employed, many with more than one job, don’t get health insurance. If you don’t have healthcare, it’s simply not affordable unless you’re quite wealthy. I’ve seen hospital bills that listed aspirin at $250 apiece.

It’s an incentive US employers offer in lieu of additional pay or employee rights. One that the employee still has to pay for. When nearing middle age, It’s just generally cheaper than going without. It relies on healthy young people, who mostly don’t really need it beyond regular cleanings/check-ups, signing up to help cover the costs of older workers.

Private health insurance is one of the largest scams ever perpetrated on Americans, heavily contributing to one of the worst healthcare systems of any developed nation.

Tying it to employment is just icing on the cake.

Sounds more like Canada to me. None of those things are covered publicly here, although we were making some slow progress on drug and dental coverage when we had a mildly progressive party sharing power.

Job only offer vision and dental, seems like it would be decent coverage if I could find a provider that takes both the insurance and new patients.

I can't really complain, it covered a couple of life-changing surgeries for me. I wish it wasn't so expensive though.
