Inspired by another question on this community about "the first time you drank alcohol", so I was just feeling like I'm the odd one out here.

I personally have never smoked (neither tobacco nor weed), never drank any alcohol. (Parents also don't do smoking, or drinking, or gambling so I kinda got lucky with the environment I grew up in, I guess...) Is that unusual? Gen Z btw.

I smoked tobacco from 15-25. Tried several times to quit and finally did. I had to convince myself I hated the taste, so I would only buy the shittiest tobacco possible. Sometimes I'd buy the pouches to force myself to roll my own without a filter, which is fucking gross.

I didn't drink (much if at all) until my late 20s. Having a drink socially is fine and can be a great way to meet new people, so long as you don't overdo it and make an ass of yourself. I still drink and am trying to do something similar to what I did with tobacco - basically only drink the lowest ABV option available, or wine with dinner.

Cannabis is a mixed bag for me. I started young around 13 and smoked heavily until my mid 20s, quit mostly, and now smoke again (but far less than when I was younger). I quit for weeks at a time and may smoke a bit before playing video games or when I complete a big project.

I consider cannabis the least harmful since it isn't very addictive, elevates my mood, and I don't ever "smoke too much".

There doesn't appear to be too many bad examples in here, so allow me.

I smoked cigarettes for a long time and, at 59, got to experience lung cancer. I'm currently 62 and still dealing with it. I'd probably be dead now if the mass in my lung hadn't adhered to the back of my chest cavity and eroded into one of my ribs causing a ridiculous amount of pain. Lung cancer usually goes undetected until it spreads to other places, like the brain, so I guess I got lucky. It did pop up on an adrenal gland, but we nuked that one too. I have another small mass in my other lung that will probably have to be radiated too. I'm also dealing with emphysema and a mouth half full of fucked up teeth. (So glamorous!)

Having no wind in my sails and trying to talk around and eat with both upper and lower partials just sucks all around. I'm only 62, but I feel like I'm 82, and I only have myself to blame.

but both only kill you if done to excess.

You'd think so but nope! According to WHO (and every other relevant organization), relevant risks increase from the first drop of alcohol, so while smaller amounts are less dangerous even moderate consumption will still literally kill you. Technically moderate consumption has some minor health benefits, but those are canceled out by the risks.

while the greatest risks are seen with heavy long-term use, even low alcohol consumption (defined as less than one drink per day) or moderate consumption (up to two drinks per day for men, and one drink per day for women because they absorb and metabolize it differently) can increase cancer risk. Among women, light drinkers have a four percent increased risk of[breast cancer, while moderate drinkers have a 23 percent increased risk of the disease.

Apparently alcohol kills about 170k+ people a year and causes millions of ER visits in America alone through various mechanisms (this data is an underestimate).

PS: I chose alcohol because it's the more controversial of the two, but everything I said here also applies to smoking.

            Every tobacco smoker is gross.

Maybe that's a product of the old "every swan is white" kind of fallacy (don't know the name of it offhand), but I've never met a habitual smoker that didn't cause physical pain to be around. They stink, their clothes stink, their car stinks, their room stinks, and maybe their whole house.

"Stinks" may be just an opinion, but it seems to be almost universally agreed on (again, in my experience).

I've always looked down on them and judged them for consciously coding to smell like that, especially because all they get from it is keeping the symptoms of withdrawal away. They don't get "high", they don't even get "relaxed" (except in the manner of relief from withdrawal symptoms). Literally all they get is smelling like poison and a priority pass to the lung cancer ride.

Not to mention possibly causing mild symptoms to everyone else nearby.

Also everyone doing it now wasn't born back when they thought it was beneficial or even neutral. It's always been the most reliable route to cancer in everyone alive today's life.

So I think all smokers are stupid and stinky at the very best, and intentionally malicious at worst.

Given that there is absolutely no benefit at all, and given the definite danger of it to you and others, I deem smokers are just bad people in general.

On the more stupid end of the spectrum, they're more stupid than bad, but even the very "best" tobacco for is stupid AF.

So to answer, no I don't consume tobacco, and that is why.

Alcohol I believe is at least not as addictive, but is a bad choice for most of the same reasons. Typically they have to go more out of control to present an offensive odor, and if kept away from driving or sharp things, much less danger to others.

Their motivations seem more apparent since they do get high from it (drunk is basically just the word for a high specifically from alcohol). I also think that (not pushing this as I don't know definitively) alcohol does less cumulative damage over time when used responsibly.

I drank occasionally (aka like 2x a week at the extreme high end) for a few years, and while I didn't ever get a hangover exactly, I did black out once and started getting headaches regularly, so it quickly became more of a negative than a positive. Haven't touched it for over 9 years, except for one sip of champagne for a toast at my brother's wedding. And it was kinda gross in my opinion. Never did like the taste of alcohol, but being drunk was fun as a while as a kid, and enjoying doing something my parents wouldn't like (coming out of a pretty conservative household) was part of it.

But almost no one just smokes occasionally. Plenty of drinkers drink occasionally. And if they're not driving, they're likely being annoying at worst. I don't judge them nearly as harshly as tobacco smokers.

I'm fine with weed enjoyers. Whether you smoke it, vape it, or eat it, I'm interested in all of it. But it does still have an odor problem. Tobacco smells bad kinda universally (in my opinion), and that tar in it makes it super gross. I've never seen weed smoke "set in" to anything and make any permanent kinda smell. Maybe because I keep it cleaned up, maybe just because it's not as oppressive in the first place.

Obviously I'm biased in how "bad" the smells are in relation to each other, but weed smell does seem to dissipate more. In my case I dry vape it, mostly through a window so it goes outside. None of my shit smells like weed. The room smells a bit when I'm emptying abv and loading new, but as soon as it's put away it's like it was never there.

So anyway, no. I don't do either. And if you smoke tobacco (at least often or regularly), we are probably not friends. And you would definitely not be my SO. Smoking goes on the "ick" list for sure. Probably the textbook example of an ick.

I've tried stuff. Don't like it. Shit's nasty. Some alcohol tastes fine but then there are the cognitive effects--no thank you.

I enjoy alcohol now, but I avoided it for a long time due to hating the taste. I still don’t like most beer, and I’ve never drank long enough to get fully drunk. The only thing that got me into it was finding drinks with a sweet taste that I liked.

I want to say that it shouldn’t matter with a good group of friends. But, I’ll admit a lot of the better social parties I’ve been to have involved drinking. It’s hard to say where the balance lies.

Many people’s issue with beer is they are drinking it from the bottle rather than a glass

I know smokers who don't stink. They also don't smoke indoors or in their cars which I think is the key. I can still smell it on them a little if I'm very close but it's not as bad as what you're describing (which I have also experienced from many smokers).

I don't drink alcohol, as i have medical issues with alcohol breakdown products.

I don't smoke, as i have seen relatives dying of lung cancer.

I don't do other recreational drugs, as during the age where people get hooked to that shit I could barely afford food and had no money to waste, and now I'm to old to start such a stupid shit.

I only take the drugs prescribed by my doc, and that is more than enough.

No tobacco and no alcohol here. I used to binge drink in college but after a night of drinking ended up with a $6000 ER/ambulance bill (yes I am American how did you know?), I decided it was time to stop altogether because I can't control my intake when I drink.

Beer, Wine, Mead, Spirits a couple times a week on average. I am super interesting in alcohol and its production as it pertains to our culture, biology, technology, and frankly our existence today. Fermentation, in general, is truly a cornerstone of us as a species.

                              I firmly believe in moderation.

I roll my own cigarettes, I might go through two a day if I'm overusing. Vaping changed my relationship with Nicotine such that I have a much as I want, when I want it. Rolling my own allows me to bypass the markings on a cigarette that tell you "you're done smoking this one" giving me power over it, a chance to decide I've had enough without the smoke making that decision for me.

I also occasionally consume alcohol. My partner is a recovering alcoholic who also believes in my philosophy of moderation over abstainance, simply for the power over substance aspect. We occasionally pick up a four pack of session brews, every few weeks or so. Beer is tasty, but we never want to have more on us than we'll have in an evening, and we try not to make a habit of consuming.

Why? I enjoy my vices. I don't feel as though the way I partake in them has negatively affected my life, so I plan to continue partaking in them as I choose to.

Quit smoking 25 years ago. Still drink.

Nah. Grew up in a non-smoking family. Never got the taste for alcohol even though I've tried it a few times. I'm a sugar fiend though

Smoking no, alcohol occasionally. Parents are very lax about it so they buy it for me. It's pretty cool.

I don't smoke tobacco, tried it once when I was younger, not my thing, didn't liked the feeling on my lungs at all, and I've seen how difficult it is to deal with the addiction from both my parents, so I never wanted to start. Weed smoke is a bit less coarse on my lungs, but still I strongly dislike the feeling (dry herb vaporizer is much better in that regard).

Alcohol I don't usually have. I might drink a beer or a whiskey in social situations, but haven't been drunk in the past 20 years.

I'm a "Xennial" (born on the cusp in X and Millennial). I quit smoking cigarettes 14 years ago and haven't touched one since. I used to drink like a fish, but have cut way back just in the past 2 years or so. With all the articles coming out about how even more than 1 drink a day is bad for you, I suppose I should quit that as well, but alcohol makes fun times even more fun for me, and that's not something I'm ready to give up forever just yet. I'm healthy, go to the gym 3 times a week, excellent bloodwork, etc, so I don't feel the need to give it up 100%.

I smoked for a couple years but gave it up when a new GF complained. I know I'm lucky af for this.... but I quit just over a single weekend. Physically it wasn't a big deal for me. I only miss the social aspect of meeting new random strangers. This was about a decade ago and don't have any cravings at all.

Booze? I used to binge drink in my 20s, not healthy mentally or physically, but once I hit 30 it felt like my tolerance dissapered and hangovers lasted days. Only on the rarest occasions do I have a single cocktail at a restaurant. Like maybe every 6 months or so.

Do a fair amount of CBD and CBN for pain relief, and around bedtime THC, but all that is edibles.
