I tried it once on Android. I wasn't able to access the files without going through its interface. For example, if I wanted to attach a file to an email, I had to copy the file out of the encrypted container to the device storage before I could do anything with it.

I tried Cryptomator years ago, but ended up just using rclone. What are the reasons to use Cryptomator over rclone?

It's 100% worth it, amazing app. I use it with Backblaze B2

Exactly. I use it with pCloud. Anything goes with it! That's the beauty of it.

E2EE has always been a security risk.

is this open source or is it just shifting the risk?

It's also been around for quite a few years now

its probably easier to set up, and it can automate mounting itself

according to its description it should work by selecting the file through the documents app. Formerly that was always disabled on xiaomi phones on every reboot if you enabled it
