What are your thoughts on UGreen NASync

I had an Unraid home server that was functioning flawlessly until it began to cause me annoyance. It started experiencing numerous issues, such as when the server was online, it wouldn’t recognise if it was connected to the Unraid server website or its IP address.

I’m on the hunt for a plug-and-play NAS device. I’ve been eyeing UGreen NASync over Synology. What are your thoughts on it? (I’m primarily looking for a media server).

Every “plug and play” NAS I’ve had has been garbage, riddled with adware and had to be firewalled from the internet. After a year they just get insanely slow because they put the worlds’s cheapest ARM SoC in there.

Personally just take your drives out and stick them in an old PC and install truenas, or just straight ZFS on Debian. Then you can run your containers on the same machine like Jellyfin, etc.

I ended up just building a box after looking for the perfect NAS and finding it didn't exist. The software is usually just crap or the hardware is underwhelming. Got a Node 804 case to slap in plenty of HDD space. Running NixOS so I'm in control of the software. In retrospect I wish I had gotten a rackmount type case. Tossed in an Arc GPU for better transcoding shortly after the initial setup.

That makes sense. I usually like GUI OSes. Other than TrueNas what else do you recommend?

I have the same case. I still have the drives; however, I sold the rest of the hardware.

My experience with UGreen

years ago, I got a USB switching device from them to switch keyboard and mouse between two computers. That device was not built to USB spec and fried the PCB on my fancy mechanical keyboard.

last year, I bought their fancy 300W desktop USB-C charger to make a laptop charging station at home. Within 8 months, the device gave off an awful smell and 2 of the ports died. UGreen would not replace the charger. These are apparently a common problem with them:

My experience with Synology

Years ago, I had a Synology NAS, and used their recommended proprietary software RAID. The power supply eventually died and took the motherboard with it. Replacement parts were not available, and there was no warranty coverage. This was before I knew about good backup practices, so my options were to buy another overpriced, non-repairable Synology NAS appliance, or forfeit my data. I considered the data a loss, built a TrueNAS machine, and never looked back.

Your experience with a proprietary NAS appliance may not be exactly the same, and they may be better these days, but having proprietary software inherently means that you cannot be sure that the software choices they make are best practice and for your benefit, or if they are designed to lock you in or increase profits in some other way.

As others have said, OpenMediaVault is a decent software alternative to TrueNAS.

No matter what you decide to go with, make sure you are following proper 3-2-1 backup protocols for any data you care about. restic to backblaze b2 seems to be the best offsite backup system currently.

Thanks for your input. Personally I never had an issue with UGreen products, Personally, I never had an issue with UGreen products; however, you’re right about the proprietary software. You’re locked in a box; you can’t do anything other than what they provide you with.

What are your thoughts on pre-build home servers from eBay?

it looks like you already have a node 804 case and the ability to build a computer, so I would avoid it unless you are looking for used enterprise gear and are okay with the tradeoffs that come with it.

Do you have a repo with your NixOS config for your NAS? TrueNAS and Home Assistant are the last non-NixOS VMs I'm running haha

Thanks for the reassurance. I only need a motherboard, RAM, and a GPU. I still have rest of the components.
