Actually if you shave your eyebrows you can have a negative eyebrow where it looks different because there is no tan.

It means it'll look a bit stretched compared to seeing it in the original arcade, or corrected to a 4:3 aspect ratio.

What I meant by Mercator projection is that it looks more stretched and large at the top than near the center of the image.
I don't think that would be fixed by some kind of pixel dimension ratio. Unless the pixels are shaped like isosceles trapezoid or something.
