Do you comsume any tobacco products (e.g. "smoking") or alcoholic beverages? Why or why not?

I understand if you don't for religious reasons but both only kill you if done to excess. Yes, they're not healthy things to do but in moderation there's often little harm done. Too much water will literally kill you. My personal view is that we're all gonna die anyway, the world's an absolute mess so I might aswell enjoy the bits I can
but both only kill you if done to excess.
You'd think so but nope! According to WHO (and every other relevant organization), relevant risks increase from the first drop of alcohol, so while smaller amounts are less dangerous even moderate consumption will still literally kill you. Technically moderate consumption has some minor health benefits, but those are canceled out by the risks.
while the greatest risks are seen with heavy long-term use, even low alcohol consumption (defined as less than one drink per day) or moderate consumption (up to two drinks per day for men, and one drink per day for women because they absorb and metabolize it differently) can increase cancer risk. Among women, light drinkers have a four percent increased risk of[breast cancer, while moderate drinkers have a 23 percent increased risk of the disease.
Apparently alcohol kills about 170k+ people a year and causes millions of ER visits in America alone through various mechanisms (this data is an underestimate).
PS: I chose alcohol because it's the more controversial of the two, but everything I said here also applies to smoking.

I personally have never smoked (neither tobacco nor weed), never drank any alcohol. (Parents also don't do smoking, or drinking, or gambling so I kinda got lucky with the environment I grew up in, I guess...) Is that unusual? Gen Z btw.
I use nicotine to self Medicare ADHD..unflavored nicotine pouches.
I like beer, malt liquor, alcopops, bourbon, and gin, too. why? uh.... monkey brain?

I never smoked anything.
I hardly ever drink alcoholic beverages but that's mostly because I don't enjoy their taste and mouth/throat feel.
I have nothing against drinking, as long as it's not overdone and (obviously!) not combined with driving or other dangerous activities. Under those conditions it's genuinely harmless fun and socializing.
The only time I was remotely drunk was at a wedding where I found a wine I actually liked. I think I drank the whole bottle, or maybe half of it, something like that. I liked the feeling of how my muscles are loose and don't react normally. I didn't feel like my thinking was compromised, but who knows.
Even if my mind was intact, it's obviously no state to drive if my muscles don't do what they would. I have no idea how some people actually get behind the wheel in this state.

wrote last edited by [email protected]I haven't drank any booze in about 7 years. I stopped when I met my now wife cause I only drank in clubs before trying (and usually failing) to get laid and I was no longer single so why would I go to these places? I never liked the taste, tbh, and thanks to her I eventually went back to God and converted to Islam so that gave me an ever bigger push until eventually alcohol just tasted too gross to even consider. I also think that being foolishly drunk after a certain age is just shameful (have a glass of wine/can of beer here and there but if you're a loud alcoholic past the age of 30 you need to check yourself, and I hope you have no offspring yet/they're old enough to disregard your bad example).
I don't mind the herb, and I've smoked ciggies since I was 15 but I'm on almost on the 3rd month of a cannabis break (recent changes in my life require my full attention) and I went down to a pack of menthols a week years ago because the French government pretty much doubled the price of ciggies in the span of a decade. At least it forced me to control my intake!

Tried it, didn’t like it.
Cigarettes are gross, and alcohol leaves me with a headache and upset stomach.
Drink more water when consuming alcohol and spread it out more. The headache is from dehydration.

Late Gen X, practically Millennial here.
My parents expressly forbade me from smoking despite being heavy smokers themselves. They also got that same forbidding from their parents, but I guess it didn't stick with them.
As such, I'm not sure whether that had any influence, or whether it was a natural aversion to the stink and filth of it but I've never smoked. Cost would have also been a big factor that prevented me from getting into it. I never had any money as a kid, and also had no smoker friends, let alone generous smoker friends, so getting a hold of anything to smoke was pretty much impossible.
Stealing from my parents might have been an option, I suppose, but I would not have wanted to face their wrath had I done that.
Alcohol and I do not get along. Too many bad experiences have come about through the combination, and it took far too long for me to learn lessons from it.
Even if I was not on medication that came with the heavy suggestion to avoid alcohol, I would not drink.

No. I don't want cancer, so i don't smoke. I also was an alco, so I'm recovered now and don't want to go back to that. I'm sure my liver agrees with my decision.

I don't smoke, can't stand the smell. I did try when I was a lad, it didn't take. I even tried clove cigs for a bit.
Took me a lot longer with alcohol. Family history and trauma put me off trying until much later in life. But I've since developed a particular taste for red ales, rich bold stout, fruity cocktails, hard ciders, and a number of complex spirits.
I had to shed that restrictive upbringing and get more in touch with my own tastes, which turned out to be surprisingly broad and nuanced.

I used to be a social smoker (cigarettes, shisha and randomly a cigar). However, I quit years ago with it.
I once had a thought “we are like a lucifer lighter, isn’t it? We smoke, smoke and smoke. Get all burned up and then throw away our lives because of it”.
At that moment, I told myself; no more. Quit cold-turkey. I never drink alcohol (due to religion).

I don't smoke or drink. These days, not sure if helps against cancer, since everything seems to give you cancer these days and it's just a matter of which cancer wins.
I would never smoke again because how absolutely disgusting it is. I don't think many smokers realise how rancid their breath and clothes smell. Or they just hang out with other smokers and it doesn't matter. The other part is that smokers are just littering and society just accepted that smokers don't care and they have to throw their garbage somewhere.
Drinking is similar, once you stop for a while you realise that it's not very good, and the whole culture around it is weird. I never realised how much you can weird people out by not drinking, because they have questions: why? But why tho? You can still drive after a glass. This wine is really good tho. This schnapps is very smooth. People will try to get you to drink and i thought about just telling people that i was an alcoholic, just so i don't have to explain myself all the time for something i don't do.

It's weird how that the smoking parents forbidding their children to smoke hardly ever works. My mom died of lung cancer, but she quit smoking like 20 years ago. My sister stopped smoking and is now back at full swing and will always ve i smoker i guess. Her boyfriend just always smoked, so that had a big part in it. Their children are now 7 and 5 and something tells me that they will just inherit that curse because giving up is just annoying i guess.

I smoke nicotine plants maybe once or twice a month ritualistically. It's genuinely nice in moderation (and something only a tiny, tiny minority typically pursue).
As for alcohol, it's GHB but toxic--GHB is better in every single way, no thanks.

I have a friend that I smoke a cigarette with at parties (the last time was several years ago so not a common occurrence) and I also have never once bought a pack for myself.
If I drink it's only at social occasions and only if they have anything I like (and if it's not too expensive).
I smoked my selfgrown weed once the rest I gave to a friend and I'm probably gonna test this years harvest as well.
And while we are at it I also took LSD once and I would want to try shrooms one day. -

I drink and have never smoked. While parents smoked, there was a push at the time to keep people from starting to smoke. In contrast, drinking was still shown to be a cool thing.
It seems like a lot of younger people have become more sober than before, so it isn't that unusual.

I smoked tobacco from 15-25. Tried several times to quit and finally did. I had to convince myself I hated the taste, so I would only buy the shittiest tobacco possible. Sometimes I'd buy the pouches to force myself to roll my own without a filter, which is fucking gross.
I didn't drink (much if at all) until my late 20s. Having a drink socially is fine and can be a great way to meet new people, so long as you don't overdo it and make an ass of yourself. I still drink and am trying to do something similar to what I did with tobacco - basically only drink the lowest ABV option available, or wine with dinner.
Cannabis is a mixed bag for me. I started young around 13 and smoked heavily until my mid 20s, quit mostly, and now smoke again (but far less than when I was younger). I quit for weeks at a time and may smoke a bit before playing video games or when I complete a big project.
I consider cannabis the least harmful since it isn't very addictive, elevates my mood, and I don't ever "smoke too much".

There doesn't appear to be too many bad examples in here, so allow me.
I smoked cigarettes for a long time and, at 59, got to experience lung cancer. I'm currently 62 and still dealing with it. I'd probably be dead now if the mass in my lung hadn't adhered to the back of my chest cavity and eroded into one of my ribs causing a ridiculous amount of pain. Lung cancer usually goes undetected until it spreads to other places, like the brain, so I guess I got lucky. It did pop up on an adrenal gland, but we nuked that one too. I have another small mass in my other lung that will probably have to be radiated too. I'm also dealing with emphysema and a mouth half full of fucked up teeth. (So glamorous!)
Having no wind in my sails and trying to talk around and eat with both upper and lower partials just sucks all around. I'm only 62, but I feel like I'm 82, and I only have myself to blame.

Every tobacco smoker is gross.
Maybe that's a product of the old "every swan is white" kind of fallacy (don't know the name of it offhand), but I've never met a habitual smoker that didn't cause physical pain to be around. They stink, their clothes stink, their car stinks, their room stinks, and maybe their whole house.
"Stinks" may be just an opinion, but it seems to be almost universally agreed on (again, in my experience).
I've always looked down on them and judged them for consciously coding to smell like that, especially because all they get from it is keeping the symptoms of withdrawal away. They don't get "high", they don't even get "relaxed" (except in the manner of relief from withdrawal symptoms). Literally all they get is smelling like poison and a priority pass to the lung cancer ride.
Not to mention possibly causing mild symptoms to everyone else nearby.
Also everyone doing it now wasn't born back when they thought it was beneficial or even neutral. It's always been the most reliable route to cancer in everyone alive today's life.
So I think all smokers are stupid and stinky at the very best, and intentionally malicious at worst.
Given that there is absolutely no benefit at all, and given the definite danger of it to you and others, I deem smokers are just bad people in general.
On the more stupid end of the spectrum, they're more stupid than bad, but even the very "best" tobacco for is stupid AF.
So to answer, no I don't consume tobacco, and that is why.
Alcohol I believe is at least not as addictive, but is a bad choice for most of the same reasons. Typically they have to go more out of control to present an offensive odor, and if kept away from driving or sharp things, much less danger to others.
Their motivations seem more apparent since they do get high from it (drunk is basically just the word for a high specifically from alcohol). I also think that (not pushing this as I don't know definitively) alcohol does less cumulative damage over time when used responsibly.
I drank occasionally (aka like 2x a week at the extreme high end) for a few years, and while I didn't ever get a hangover exactly, I did black out once and started getting headaches regularly, so it quickly became more of a negative than a positive. Haven't touched it for over 9 years, except for one sip of champagne for a toast at my brother's wedding. And it was kinda gross in my opinion. Never did like the taste of alcohol, but being drunk was fun as a while as a kid, and enjoying doing something my parents wouldn't like (coming out of a pretty conservative household) was part of it.
But almost no one just smokes occasionally. Plenty of drinkers drink occasionally. And if they're not driving, they're likely being annoying at worst. I don't judge them nearly as harshly as tobacco smokers.
I'm fine with weed enjoyers. Whether you smoke it, vape it, or eat it, I'm interested in all of it. But it does still have an odor problem. Tobacco smells bad kinda universally (in my opinion), and that tar in it makes it super gross. I've never seen weed smoke "set in" to anything and make any permanent kinda smell. Maybe because I keep it cleaned up, maybe just because it's not as oppressive in the first place.
Obviously I'm biased in how "bad" the smells are in relation to each other, but weed smell does seem to dissipate more. In my case I dry vape it, mostly through a window so it goes outside. None of my shit smells like weed. The room smells a bit when I'm emptying abv and loading new, but as soon as it's put away it's like it was never there.
So anyway, no. I don't do either. And if you smoke tobacco (at least often or regularly), we are probably not friends. And you would definitely not be my SO. Smoking goes on the "ick" list for sure. Probably the textbook example of an ick.

I've tried stuff. Don't like it. Shit's nasty. Some alcohol tastes fine but then there are the cognitive effects--no thank you.
