The weapons are purchased legally by Americans and simply driven over. Also through legal ports of entry. It's not this complicated process.

How do you figure? From my understanding China and other places make precursor ingredients which are then manufactured in the field in Latin America. Are you saying the vast majority is fentanyl manufactured in China and shipped directly to the US?

simply driven over
That's called smuggling.

Isn't this mostly just for show for his base anyway? "See! I'm doing what I said I'd do!"

Right but the previous commenter is saying adding 10k troops isn’t going to impact the existing ways those guns are smuggled into Mexico. They’d have to stop and search every car which I would require a lot more people at the border

Export guns, import people.

There has been lots of well published studies in the US last year. Well published enough to catch on the international press.
Most of their fentanyl seems to be smuggled out of their chemical and drug industries.

Trump never mentions anything that can make him look like he gave anything up. His fragile ego just doesn't allow that. He always has to come out as the winner and everyone else has to come out as the loser. And that's what he will call them.

Good for use as a talking point in the next round of nonsense that will start in a few weeks but impossible in practice. The US has been worshipping guns as a religion for 200 years and the Canada-US border has been perforated consistently by smugglers that whole time.

Or you know America could ban the production of new guns and ammunition; and begin destroying guns already in circulation. That's the real answer to America's and central/south America gun problem. It's not like drugs where it's obvious when they are smuggled in large quantities. Guns can be disassembled and parts hidden within the maze of parts that is modern vehicles. Search every vehicle? As if a military personnel will be able to look at a engine bay and be able to tell if one piece of metal is a car part or gun part. But a brick of Fentanyl is kinda easier to tell if its supposed to be their. Also, since America has been a nation we have been treating central and South America as our personal trash can, war zone, political toy, and financial sow to be milked dry. A couple thousand dollars and a wink will get you past any check point into Mexico. Their military just as much as the police know the problem won't be solved at the boarder. You could find thousands of guns by searching every vehicle and it wouldn't make a dint; smugglers will just evolve. or you could prevent millions from every being made or transferred hands at the source. Or you know ending the war on drugs would defunct the cartels over night. The problem isn't the boarder!!! The problem is decades of poor policy and leadership in America.

Those texan gun dealers love selling to the cartels through proxy buyers. They are so easy to find if you have access to the right information - just look at whoever buys more than two guns in a 6 month period... the top 80% of that list will probably be unable to procure all the guns they bought because they distribute them over the border.
If we can smuggle people in to the US easily, it should be trivial to smuggle weapons out of the US easily. Hell, if you take out the receivers you can do it in plain sight, just move the receivers illegally.

I agree with you on that. Unfortunately, it's more complicated than that. Owning guns doesn't necessarily lead to bad things happening, but it often does, because people are mentally stressed and exhausted. The problem is the poor living conditions many people are forced to live under. What would really help is some sort of social welfare. But i guess, the US has a lot of work to do before it gets there.

Yeah, maybe it's that, or maybe it's that the arms trade is profitable.

I never said gun ownership is the issue. It's the fact that we have 3 guns (that we know about) for every person and are making more. We need to remove hundreds of millions of guns from cycling

Yeah I mean that's what has been happening for decades and it's worked out very well for the US. Profits from arms sales and a steady supply of cheap labor from immigrants. Don't know why the Republicans suddenly want to kill their cash cow.
