People are scared of conceding perpetual licenses because of misuse at other companies. I don't believe your phrasing in the ToS was bad though. -

@Mastodon my hot take is that while I wouldnโt trust a binding arbitration clause with a large corporation, I trust Mastodon and I donโt think they would ever abuse it. I think itโs more of a defense against detrimental lawsuits from big tech rivals. That being said, I think there must be a better way to implement this to keep good standing with users since some were turned off by it.

Thank you for taking these concerns seriously.But rather than just focusing on the TOS verbiage, you should also scrutinize the people involved in creating them, as their values do not seem aligned with the communityโs.

Next steps should be talking to people STEEPED in libre software, open culture, etm like @richardfontana @bkuhn @pluralistic et all could be immensely helpful in this process. I wouldn't leave this up to the same ilk that the corporate social media companies use.
