10 years ago, Obsidian made the only D&D-style Monk I've ever really loved—all it took was grounding him in harsh asceticism, mortification of the flesh, Aztec history, and stoner comedies

I really should play PoE again one of these days. My first playthrough was just the edgiest background i could pick (death godlike grim walker paladin), stat focused entirely on perception, resolve, and might, so i could maximize finding things and combat.
Loved Durance the most myself, something about a bitter, angry, irreverant priest was excellent. named my ship in PoE 2 "The Burning Whore" for him

How much better is PoE 1 than PoE 2? I never played 1 but I got a free copy of 2 from somewhere some years ago and played about half of it but never finished it. It was alright but something about it never really clicked with me. I don't know if it was the companions maybe. It wasn't bad by any stretch but it didn't really connect with me on a deeper level either.

Your PoE 2 experience is my PoE 1 experience. It wasn't bad but it didn't hold my interest. So many of the interactions felt like dead ends because you didn't have the right class/background/trait.
Baulder's Gate 3 always made me feel like I had options and then sometimes I got an extra because of some trait. PoE feels like you lack the trait we want so straight to the default path for you.
It's to bad I liked the world they were building.

That's unfortunate. I guess PoE 1 stays pushed way to the bottom of my CRPG backlog.
