Linux

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

    It's broken on some instances.

Personally I find git-credential-manager much easier to use. It manages Oauth2 for you. Or ssh keys.

Generally take a more containerised approach to my development, before I just had one big folder for projects and various others. It made me figure out how to be more organised especially with dependancies and folder layout.

Honestly I'll just send it back at this point. I have kernel panics that point to at least two of the cores being bad. Which would explain the sporadic nature of the errors. Also why memcheck ran fine because it only uses the first core by default. Too bad I haven't thought about it when running memtest because it lets you select cores explicitly.

macOS blocks tools like Espanso from viewing or modifying login input fields. I wonder if SikuliX may be of interest to you, then. I just invoke KeePassXC's built-in autotyper; it's not too much more painful for me. Anyway, thanks for sharing! We certainly use it for very different things.

"Echo chamber" has a negative connotation but doesn't actually mean anything negative by default. A group that all parrots the same idea, whether it's beneficial or negative, is an echo chamber

i haven't noticed any and i learned yesterday that i'm must put a custom rom on it to get it to work in this country; so there's room for modification if something doesn't work for you.

Tailscale edits /etc/resolve.conf, since your DNS isn't working start by making sure that file is how the archwiki suggests rather than what tailscale changes it to. An uninstalled tailscale may still have left that file modified.

Ive said repeatedly that its certain to be an issue with their setup I have even provided proof that its not typical. Its just a terminal applies to pretty much every type of application. There are lightweight WM, text editors, terminals, etc. etc. for a reason. I can run my current setup with its 2 different animated 4k wallpapers and all the over shit I have running on my old 4800u that is only slightly slower and it consumes an insane amount of CPU at idle. Just because you can does not mean you should.

Get rid of the dGPU power comsumption at all costs, as it's underpowered for anything serious. Enable Intel AMT so that you get hardware level remote control, including power control. Afet that it's a now-weak power-hungry CPU with weak cooling, but a decent amount of RAM, so, IDK, a buildserver or a VM host for scenarios when something needs to happen in the background, but latency doesn't matter.

In fact, I do find myself in the sentence, I tinker with all types of stuff, I wouldn't have tried all of this if I didn't also like it. I could always be comfortable and stay with Windows, but Linux is fun and and it teaches me a lot about operating systems and networking. Thanks for your words, now I think I will try going with Arch, I decided.

I just want to second this comment and chime in with my experiences. (Thanks also for the information on Framework as I’m not familiar and love to learn) My family primarily uses Thinkpads. We refurbish them for fun (and often give them away to our community). We run Linux easily on almost all our Thinkpads. So far, Linux works very well even on some old machines (as old as 2012 which wouldn’t be what OP is looking for but still worth mentioning). We try different distros all the time but mostly stick with Fedora and PopOS. Right now, I am on a refurbished Thinkpad T480s running PopOS. The 7th gen processor is probably too slow for OP but it runs Linux great and it can even handle running a large dwarf fortress through Steam haha. The T480s also has a touchscreen option (and screens can often be swapped out). The T480s screens usually have a hinge where they can lay completely flat (although, I’m not sure if they are pen compatible). A more recent Thinkpad with a better processor could be an option for OP to consider in addition to the other great suggestions you made.

Ah that makes sense, thanks! the laptops mostly use Intel x86 chips I mean, I'd be happy to see them ship ARM laptops in the vein of Apple'd M chips or Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chips ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think we’ll see m1+ levels of desktop performance on RISCV within the next 4 years though. trump will do wonders for the Chinese semiconductor industry I hope so, that would e awesome! On their servers? possibly. RISC-V is competitive when you stuff a bunch of cores into it and make it do basic server tasks that haven’t gotten more complex over the years. And in AI, you may just need a cheap CPU to orchestrate your GPUs/NPUs so anything will work there. I think this is the approach Tenstorrent is taking with their AI accelerators, but I'm not entirely clear on how much of the processing is done in RISC-V and how much is custom silicon. But, as a reletively inexpensive PCIe card, it seems pretty interesting

If you are using this as a server, I recommend Debian. If GRUB displayes, try text only/videosafe. If this image doesn't work, try x86 version.

Not to mention that I can't find any indication that Mint has a fixed version of ffmpeg at all.
