Linux

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

After a decade of watching the GIMP community and leadership refuse obvious UI changes insisting it’s just “different” as well insisting on a name we can’t deal with in schools I’m not convinced they’re even serious anymore. My new hope is for the Graphite project to get where it wants to be. There’s a reason gimp forums are full of first time artists posting pony’s while every competitor open or not is trying new things. There is some new young devs adding amazing things to GIMP (finally), I hope they can steer this into better waters but I’m beyond sceptical.

It wont be a problem because from the Live USB you can mount the encrypted drive in the file explorer app (Dolphin on KDE) after supplying the encryption password.

I'm aware, but thank you. This post was intended to be a guide for people that end up in this situation.

I read most of his points and I agree with them... But I have so much else to worry about, I just can't get worked up about this. And I think he is ignoring the firestorm that would ensue if, say, openssh tried to change from using the current directory. There would probably be five forks started immediately to restore the original functionality - and is ssh really adding new features like he claims? Maybe it could be a config option in the site install (which I thought it already was), but forcing a change to fix what is a minor problem isn't worth the headache. I do hate that some of those package systems install software into home. It inflates my backups dramatically and unnecessarily. I use opt for that sort of thing instead. For example, my immich socket install is in /opt.

Sort of. The person that made the initial commit is not the one that quit (Rust side).

Again, just subtract all the unique packages and you still get more packages than the AUR If other distros have the same package, it's not a machine generated package, is it?

does X11 support actually measuring and calibrating colour? To the same level that Wayland does - it doesn't actively do anything for or against it. There are tools that happen to be built for X11, and which you can also use on Wayland (with a very small amount of additional manual steps vs. how it works on X11)

For a more specific walkthrough if you’re a reader: https://learning.lpi.org/en/learning-materials/010-160/ Otherwise there are dozens of videos that walk through the objectives. My personal recommendation would be to get a virtual machine or some place you can run Linux commands, then try to answer the exam objectives from that terminal. You can always ask chat GPT to give examples or commands that gather the information you want. Then ask for clarification on the syntax, breakdown of options and what they do, etc.

Then why make GUIs, or software installers, or update managers? Let's keep the people in TOP FORM in case of an outage! Hey, it's not like I don't agree with you, but actually I found myself learning faster in spite of the help. Having someone guide you through something is very educational, and getting things wrong is (sadly) a method of contributing a LOT of detritus into your brain. "Let's see, I did this last time, but was that when I fucked up or when I fixed it?" I like it better just learning the right way.

I would like to use it specifically for the sync between machines, because ridicolous terminal commands like with find, grep or checking/comparing used storage volumes is abysmal to remember. I also set up my own server which worked quite well, I just wish the "client" installation as a proper debian package instead of this stupid shell script.
