Games that require daily participation to make any sort of progress are a non-starter for me. I have other shit that's far more interesting than fake anime tiddies.
It is simultaneously an obnoxious speed bump that slows down my ability to binge when I've got free time and a needy attention drain when I'm absorbed in something else.
Truly the worst of both worlds.

Dude needs to stop playing predatory gacha games.
I don't understand people who WILLINGLY install that shit. They KNOW how they work and are monetized. And unlike gambling at a casino, there's zero chance of you being up money at any point.

The ads are everywhere and the games are often F2P - no barrier to download or install. Excellent for hooking younger kids, especially ones whose parents can't or won't give them access to the old fashioned games.

Arguably the singular upside. You can coast in a Gacha game without losing a ton of money a lot longer than you'll last in Vegas.

here's a quick cheat sheet of current DSM criteria for a SUD:
::: spoiler spoiler1 increased amt used
2 desire/failure to reduce use
3 lots of time spent on it
4 cravings for it
5 life obligations unmet
6 social relationships disrupted
7 reduction in recreational activities
8 use even in dangerous situations
9 use despite medical risk
10 building tolerance
11 experiences withdrawal:::
you need at least 2 to meet mild criteria (very easy to meet mild!) and 6 or more to be considered severe
so let's look at oxygen addiction:
we dont increase our use over time, we have no desire or failure to reduce use (even if suicidal it's not about the oxygen), oxygen requires very little time to get, we generally dont crave it cuz we always got it and without it there are no cravings anyway, it doesnt disrupt obligations, doesnt impact relationships, doesnt impact recreation, we don't put ourselves in dangerous situations just to use it, there's no medical risk to consuming it, and we do not build tolerance. we DO experience w/d. so 1 out of 11 aint cuttin it, sorry!!
if you swim a significant amount you'll learn how much time is spent on it, and if you try breathing water you'll start craving oxygen (well probably more craving the removal of co2), also I would imagine that oil refineries could be considered places where oxygen is dangerous but people still use.

wrote last edited by [email protected]I've been playing Total Annihilation the last couple days. The 1997 game that you can still get on GOG for $5. I had it as a kid and played all the time.
My son has been wanting to play it with me, so I gave him a quick rundown on "skirmish" mode earlier tonight. He caught on pretty quick. It can get brutal though. Hopefully I can get the network muliplayer working so we can play together.
Worth every penny.

I know I can easily get hooked on those so I just avoid them. Games should work around my life, not the other way around. That's why I'm heavily into single player games now. I can hit pause whenever I like.

wrote last edited by [email protected]Ah, probably my favorite RTS.
I would say the biggest problem TA had was simply lag. Once you really get going with the volume of units - especially over a network - the loads on the system can get heavy. Basically, you get carried away having too much fun building some absurd army.
There's a new iteration of the franchise - Planetary Annihilation - that I've been meaning to check out as soon as I have some free time. Good reviews on Steam. Stick it on your list and wait for a sale, if the $30 price point bothers you. But I think it'll probably look a little nicer and run a little smoother.

I haven't really run into that recently... Though I imagine pretty much any x86 system made in the last 20 years or so should handle it fine. I remember getting to that point on my old PIII-powered Optiplex GX1, that was a fun time. Trying to build nukes, an army of assault kbots/vehicles, bombers, and construction bots, and trying to guide what remains of your previous armada to where you think the enemy is because they took out your long range radar units...
I do have the CDs in storage somewhere, too, I should dig those out and see if they play nice.

You can get loose MRE elements from surplus places for cheap.

Jordan Petersen is a trash heap and making a bad faith argument.
Yeah, he's shit but if you're impressionable and self-centred, you can get sucked in by his bit.
Like I remember watching a couple clips and thinking sounds like he's just saying common sense reasonable stuff with a side of pop philosophy -- I don't get what people are mad about but I have a good relationship with my parents and was raised to respect myself and others, so he had no to Morty's Mind Blowers for me. I just moved on.
Later of course, thanks to others writing about it, I discovered that he has said some legitimately heinous things, and despite being so pathetic is actually an incredibly dangerous individual, meme-wise.
