Cocktails, the libationary art!

A place for conversation about cocktails, ingredients, home mixology, the bar industry or liquor industry, glassware - this is not an exhaustive list. If you think it’s in some way related to cocktails it’s probably fine.

If you post something you didn’t create give credit whenever possible.

Pictures and recipes are encouraged when posting a drink as a standalone post. Example of an ideal drink post:

We love garnishes.

Remember the code of conduct, keep it nice. In terms of cocktails- specific etiquette that might be different from other communities:

Mentioning your blog, insta, website, book or bar is allowed, yes. For now at least, we do allow self-promotion. If it gets out of hand this might change.

A good post with a drink you don’t like is still a good post! Try not to conflate the drink and the post or poster. If someone has a relevant title, gorgeous photo and clearly formatted recipe of what you consider a truly terrible drink, a comment is more appropriate than a downvote.

On that topic: Polite critique/reviews of drinks (or posts, images, etc.) is allowed here. Encouraged , even. It’s a good tool for improving your drinks and content. Really, just be nice.

Hmm, I would replace the beer with a dry tepache, probably, but would try it as written. Husband loves those IPA beers, especially the higher alcohol ones, Jai Alai & similar. Sure he'd finish the can for me.

Agreed; I’ve been using that mezcal exclusively since I first ran into it last year. So good!

Fuck yeah I just bought that liquor online only an hour or so ago. Crazy to see it pop up in the wild. I hope it tastes good!

Well it's dry July and I am having a strawberry lemonade - strawberry syrup, fresh lemon juice, the end of the strawberry kvass, and filtered water. Strawberry kvass - cut strawberries tops off generously, save the strawberries for something else. Mix the tops with lots of sugar and boiled and cooled (or really filtered like lifestraw filtered) and any spices you want. Let this sit loosely covered until it's fizzy, then strain and bottle. Strawberry syrup - lots of ways to make this. I did cook down strawberries in sugar and water then strained it. Tossed the mush of sweet strawberry gook into the kvass pitcher based on this recipe she doesn't use the tops for some reason but I always make the fruit fermented drinks with the peels, tops, ends - one of the reasons to do it in the first place is to divert waste!

I do 1:1 by volume most of the time. That I can save in the fridge, and people here use it for iced coffee too. Any other variation (rich, vanilla, etc) I label to specify. If no label it's the 1:1 simple. It's possible our sugar is sweeter now than in the past too - I know that sounds strange but plants get bred for more sweetness and processing changes.

Using downsized recipes is pretty standard for me when I'm drinking at home. For a lot of cocktails, half-size or third-size is just fine, especially when you start experimenting with ingredients and ratios. And I have something of an issue with actually committing to a full-size drink (i.e. I often get bored of it halfway through). However, one of the biggest barriers to entry is the need for smaller glassware, which, while not impossible to source, is limited in its variety. “Where I see a lot of room for improvement is tiny rocks and tiny Highball glasses,” Zielinski says, noting that miniature coupes or diminutive Martini glasses are more readily available. This is definitely an issue. I've been using stemmed liqueur glasses for small Martini-style cocktails, but even in somewhat smaller rocks glasses a half-sized Old Fashioned-style drink just looks lost.

Let’s be honest, there are a million versions of every cocktail out there online these days, and most of them are fairly terrible. That sounds more like a matter of taste and making sure that you actually have the same ingredients (or knowing how to adjust if you don't) as the person who made the recipe.

I did end up making this. The kvass is a lot sweeter than my usual tepache, but the drink once mixed is delicious even though sweet and does hit the spot as a non alcoholic cocktail. I did put the strawberry tops in the kvass, and it fermented in 4 days but remains quite sweet.

Doing a riff on a white negroni. 1.5 oz gin 1 oz white aperitif wine (might use lilet blanc as an alternative) .5 oz yellow chartreuse dash of citrus bitters garnish with grapefruit peel

I prefer my Cosmopolitans less sweet and lighter on the Cranberry juice. 50ml vodka 15ml cranberry juice 20ml triple sec 20ml lime juice I think it tastes a better with juice, but you can also use 5ml cranberry syrup instead. It's quite convenient since the syrup has a longer shelf life. [image: 28d0981b-62ec-4aaf-a9f0-a05df4b22de0.png]
