The Denephew joke remains one of my all time favourites, and it was a footnote to a footnote.

C'mon as a child I didn't know I shouldn't swallow silica gel or put a nylon bag over my head, I learned those from reading the warnings or my parents telling me what they read.

And by all accounts, Zdzisław Beksiński was nicest Polish dad anyone had ever met. Didn't get in the way of him setting down some of the most eldritch of horrors to canvas.

As the other person noted, pill pockets or pill wraps help a lot. My more difficult cat initially kept spitting them out even with the wrap, but he eventually learned that I'm going to try again and again, and he doesn't get the treats until he swallows, so now he's pretty good at swallowing on the first try AND I can get away with the occasional unwrapped pill. The other trick I used was using my younger cat to help train the older one. I started off using a syringe of water, followed by treats to get them used to the general process and the understanding that they get treats after. My younger cat would line up for another syringe of water knowing he would get treats, so we'd do a few rounds of syringe water every evening, and I just kept doing that until the older cat got curious enough to voluntarily participate. Once they were both voluntarily participating in the syringed water, they would at least come to me for pills, so the only fighting was to get them to swallow. Some tricks to encourage swallowing include holding their mouth shut and stroking the underside of their neck, and/or following that pill immediately with a syringe of water.

Most sugar consumed in Europe is from sugarcane. Most sugar produced in Europe is from sugarbeets, but that production is still less than the imported sugar from sugarcane (because sugarcane is just vastly more productive). They didn't extract sugar from sugar beet back in the 14th century. In fact only in 1747 was it discovered that beets had sucrose and sugar beets themselves were only created after that, via selective breeding, so I don't think they had sugar as we know it back then. However as somebody else pointed out, they had honey which has a very high concentration of sugar. I suspected sugar wasn't extracted from sugar beet in the Middle Ages or earlier but I wasn't sure and prompted by your question I went searching for it and indeed that is the case since sugar beets didn't even exist back then.

Oh, your English is great and legitimately feels natural, because I think you've communicated your point quite well. I can't really dispute much of anything without sounding like I fundamentally agree with you, but I do have a seemingly small/semantic distinction that I think is important; I don't think America's primary core issue has been education or overbearing religious douchebaggery, but this weird extreme epistemological weight given to every individual's opinion. It's similar to the bullshit fuzzy philosophy the nazis would use to justify their ideology by insisting everyone should respect their deeply held beliefs. While I don't think your assessment is perfectly accurate, I do very much believe it shows you're paying way more attention than the average American.
