Blaming the LLM for it is like blaming a search engine for showing bad results.
Except we give it the glorifying title "AI". It's supposed to be far better than a search engine, otherwise why not stick with a search engine (that uses a tiny fraction of the power)?
I don't know what point you're arguing. I didn't call it AI and even if I did, I don't know any definition of AI that includes infallibility. I didn't claim it's better than a search engine, either. Even if I did, "Better" does not equal "Always correct."

Not just you. Ai is making people dumber. I am frequently correcting the mistakes of my colleagues that use.
My attitude to all of this is I've been told by management to use it so I will. If it makes mistakes it's not my fault and now I'm free to watch old Stargate episodes. We're not doing rocket surgery or anything so who cares.
At some point they'll realise that the AI is not producing decent output and then they'll shut up about it. Much easier they come to that realisation themselves than me argue with them about it.

It's important to remember that there's a lot of money being put into A.I. and therefore a lot of propaganda about it.
This happened with a lot of shitty new tech, and A.I. is one of the biggest examples of this I've known about.
All I can write is that, if you know what kind of tech you want and it's satisfactory, just stick to that. That's what I do.

I can see that you’re trying to mirror my comment, I just fail to see the point you’re trying to make. Cool, you know people who have a somewhat legitimate use for the unprofitable, unreliable technology that’s built on rampant theft and consumes obscene amounts of power and water. And?
We already have the GPUs, they use a few hundred watts sporadically, definitely less than gaming. They use no water, they are air cooled and we drink more coffee than water ourselves. Do you just copy paste blindly arguments form the internet or do you ever stop and think from time to time?

It did help me make a basic script and add it to task scheduler so it runs and fixes my broken WiFi card so I don't have to manually do it. (or better said, helped me avoid asking arrogant people that feel smug when I tell them I haven't opened a command prompt in ten years)
Yeah it definitely has its uses. OP wasn't saying it's never useful, I think you may have missed the forest for the trees.

Yeah but LLMs don't train off of data automatically, you need a separate dedicated process for that, it won't happen from just using them. In that sense, companies can still use your data to train them in the background, even if you aren't directly using an LLM, or they can not train them even when you are using them. I guess in the latter case there is a bigger incentive for them to train them than otherwise, but to me it seems basically the same thing privacy wise.

And suddenly we’re talking about locally hosted models I guess? You’re just contorting your argument and cherry picking the single part of the deeply problematic technology you could possibly defend. It’s disingenuous and you’re just poorly covering it up with condescension.

Yeah that is a risk, then again if they're forcing their employees to use AI they're probably not far off firing everyone anyway so I don't see that it makes a huge amount of difference for my position.

When i was a kid and firat realized i was maybe a genius, it was terrifying. That there weren't always gonna just be people smarter than me who could fix it.

I hate LLMs for everything except summing up those endless Genshin quest dialogues. I want to know roughly what the quest is about, but not going to read/listen to hours of extremely dry and stilted thesaurus-wanking. But I'd never use it for anything where I actually care about the accuracy of the output.

If I want ideas from ChatGPT, I could just ask it myself. Usually, if I'm reaching out to ask people's opinions, I want, you know, their opinions. I don't even care if I hear nothing back from them for ages, I just want their input.

I do agree with them that stealing may not be the right word, isn't plagiarism more accurate? But plagiarism is generally considered theft so it probably doesn't matter. I just found it really interesting that I personally haven't really given much thought to the semantics of theft when no physical object is involved even though it's been discussed for like centuries atp
Plagiarism isn't correct either. For something to be plagiarism it needs to be both copied exactly as well as intentionally lying about the authorship (i.e. you claim you wrote something that you didn't).
The output of Large Language Models similar in some ways to plagiarism—when someone claims they wrote something that was actually just the output of an LLM. However, that really isn't the same thing because an LLM isn't a legal entity that's capable of owning anything.
LLMs are also just a tool. An advanced tool that can generate all sorts of texts and software but they still require a human to tell them what to do.
If some human asks ChatGPT to write something in the style of Stephen King what even is that? That's not against the law (you can't copyright a writing style). It's basically, "not a thing." Is that even a bad thing? I honestly don't think so because of I put myself in those same shoes: "write a comment in the style of Riskable" all I can do is
. It's of no consequence.I'd also argue that it's of no consequence to authors either. What impact does it have on them? None. It doesn't effect their book/whatever sales. It doesn't hurt the market for their works—if anything, it makes the market for their works greater because their works won't be total shit like the output of some LLM (LOL).
